AES50 over long distance with SINGLE MODE fibre.....?

Hello!

Anybody in here have any experience with transporting AES50 between two consoles (MIDAS) over SINGLE MODE fibre for long distances?

There is a solution with the KLARK TEKNIK DN9620 and similar. It will convert to MULTI MODE fibre, to be able to go about 500m.
In my scenario, I need to go several kilometers, perhaps as much as 8-10 km, (5-6 miles).

I know I could insert a option card, go to Dante or MADI or other standards, and then send those on fiber, but I though that native AES50 would be nice, for simplicity, integration and preamp control etc.
(+ I am already using the MADI slot in my M32.....)

Anybody?

And if some from Music Group is reading:
If I get the hardware bits together to convert the AES50 CAT5 into light, do you think there will be any timing issue with the long distance and clock signals being misaligned?

Thanks for any help.

Arne,
For that proposed distance you will have to use single mode fiber. If a protocol is designed to run on an ethernet network like Dante is, it will clock. Tell us about the network. Is it shared? How many switches from end to end? If necessary, do you have admin rights to configure it for audio?

I don't think he is talking about a network, he is talking about sending AES50 over SM fiber instead of MM fiber.

Hi Arne,

The Klark Teknik DN9680 AES50 Extender & Multiplexer operates via single mode fibre, enabling users to extend their AES50 runs up to 1,000 meters.

There wouldn’t be clocking or timing issues. All of the audio would leave at the same time, as the DN9680 can accommodate eight AES50 connections (192 channels) down a single fibre cable, while only introducing 0.1ms of latency from input to output.

I suggest contacting our Applications department, who can spec you exactly what you’d need in order to meet your requirements.

Re: AES50 over long distance with SINGLE MODE fibre.....?

Hello guys.

Thanks for the replies.

JOHN: no, it´s not a network as such, but a fiber link between two locations (studio and control room). I will use a pair of separate CWDM wavelengths to essentially get my "own" fiber, even though we only have ONE strand (not a pair) and there will be 6-8 HD-SDI + gigabit network going on in the same fibre.

CHASE:
Thank you for that bit of info. If a pair of 9680 adds 0,1ms latency over 1000 meter, then over 10 kilometer it will still be less than 0,2 ms, as most of that latency is in the 9680 and not the cable itself.
(the speed of light in a fibre tells me that most of the 0,1ms is not because of the distance...)

I have contacted my local MIDAS/KLARK/MUSIC GROUP dealer to try to borrow a pair of DN9620 and run some tests.

Thanks for your help!

FYI, you could also just convert the multi mode signal to single mode, if you already have the AES50-MMF infrastructure. Once the signal is light, you can do whatever you want to it with a format-agnostic media converter with the right bandwidth capabilities.

Since you are in norway - check out barnfind. They make what you would need, and some of the finest optical routers and general CWDM infrastructure around...
