I should have been a 'phone phreak' back in the 1960s and 70s... Amazing what was done by ATT.

It's interesting to see how they used analog side-band and multiplexing... back in the 1930s... to add voice capacity. Much technology was developed by the Ma Bell monopoly (mostly for the DoD at first) that still serves us today.

Even more basic stuff like information theory, and even the negative feedback requited to deliver ruler flat frequency response that allows thousands of amplifiers in series to pass intelligible speech... and not gibberish.
