Here's a photo from a 30 year old book of photos that I found cleaning out the basement today.

It's Lenny Bruce on the stage of the Fillmore in June 1966.

I call your attention to the drum set belonging to the support act, The Mothers of Invention.

The microphones on the drum set were not removed for Lenny's set. There weren't any used. Jimmy Carl Black was on his own, dynamics wise.

Was Jack Bruce playing bass that night?

Seriously cool stuff here.

No, the bassist that night, and with the Mothers for most of the mid 60s was Roy Estrada.

Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker didn't make their first appearance at the Fillmore until the following year, 1967.

Still no mics on the drums in this picture but the beginning of the "wall" of Marshall amps makes an early appearance. And there were certainly no mics on the 4x12s.

It was supposed to be joke. Bruce "brothers", we can get a gig opening for my brother, (I know, I know, wrong band, but hey, I have limited bandwidth to work with in here.)
(And you usually "get" me more than most.)

I confess, this time the joke flew right over my head.

But at least I got an excuse to post another "in the day" photo.

Another note on that. The other two bands' amps remained on stage while Cream played. That was because in those days the format at the Fillmore was for all three bands to each play two 45 minute sets in rotation. The backline amps were generally left in place and only the drums and keyboards, if any, were moved between sets. You can see one of the other bands' drum sets on the riser to the left of Eric Clapton's Marshalls.

The other bands on the bill were the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and the South Side Sound System, which included guitarist Harvey Mandel and harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite. With Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop in the Butterfield band that meant FOUR outstanding guitarists on the same show.

And what would now be a priceless collection of vintage Fender amps ;-)!
