Aphex 240

Re: Aphex 240

I just bought a new Aphex 240 for fun. Clear-out sale at a dealer, got something like 70% off on the list price, just couldn't resist.

240 Dual Gated Compressor | Aphex

Anybody ever tried it?

I love this marketing speak:

“Indispensable for live sound. This space-saving design puts two stereo processors in one rack space.”

How many processors out there really have less than two channels per rack unit these days. Enough to have to point out that this one doesn't?

Anyway, sorry, haven't tried it. Looks like nice new toy at a great price :)

Re: Aphex 240

DBX 160A maybe ;)

I prefer the channel density and SQ in my DPR404s, they're great. Comps is one of those things I like to play around with.
Wish I could bring my Urei LA-22s with me on the road more often, they sound excellent, but are a bit fragile. One of the things I really enjoy about having an analog setup is testing and trying different comps for different inputs. I guess one could do the same thing in the digital world with plugins, but I rarely use digiboards with plugin capability.

Btw: 160A is not one of my friends. Regarded by many people as the go-to comp for any input, I'm not happy about it. But I have some channels to serve those who prefer it and use something else when I mix :)

Agreed. Got the 160XT in my rack for the same reason. The DBX 1066 is my friend though. I can dial the attack and release back a touch and get you that "160A" sound or pull it back a little more and get a really great sound for things I would use a 160 series on.

I sometimes use my analog setup for just this reason, even if a digital one might have been more convenient.

I remember Robert Scovill pointed this out at the Avid/Digidesign class: In the analog days everyone mixed and matched different boxes with different mixers to develop all kinds of interesting combinations, but with digital mixers, all of a sudden we accept having all EQ/comps/gates made by the same company as the mixer...

I just made a small travel rack with two Lexicon reverbs and a Waves MaxxBCL that can be used with analog setups, or when used with my Yamaha DM 2000, all interconnection will remain digital on AES/EBU and SPDIF :)

Enjoy your tour!:)

I had similar thought in a post a while back on the other audio website referring to stand alone outboard digital compressors, gates, EQ's ect. When they came out on the market they never really took off with great acceptance, with the exception of maybe EQ's. A few years later digital mixers were becoming the norm with digital comps and gates on every channel being used without question.
