Automixer solutions

Since there is no automixer in the new firmware, I'm looking at alternative solutions. There is the Waves Dugan plugin, but I am very upset that they want to charge $500 for the Multirack which is the host application (I guess that's what we call it now) that accommodates the plugins. It should be free. $500 is reasonable and doable, $1000 is not.

Then there is the X-ADAT slot card for the X-32 which would let me insert two Dugan E1's. Can someone tell me if this card is actually available, and what does it cost? I've searched unsuccessfully to find a price.

And has anyone actually used the Dugan E1 this way? Or in such a way as to have it inserted post-fader, which is how it should be?

Thanks in advance,
Mick Berg.

Mick,
i believe there is another alternative host program called live professor, wondering if that would do the trick?

Is there a reason you are willing to pay almost 10k (or is it about 8k for the TRS E1??) for a pair of E1s and an ADAT card but not pay $1k for the necessary software to do this internally to the console? If you can do it inside the console I would highly suggest that as it can be cumbersome to use an external Dugan device. We currently use an E2 with a Midas PRO1, and while the results are impressive the extra time for setup and patching (not to mention the high use if I/O on the console since the PRO1 doesn't have ADAT) is not.

Thanks Chris. I have downloaded it and will see if it accepts the Waves Dugan Demo plugin.

However we have a basic issue. The X32 only has six insert points (the aux in and outs) even internally, as far as I can see,unless you do tricky and wasteful routing. This is something I didn't anticipate and has reduced my impression of the console hugely. I hope the Midas X32 is not like that. If I'm wrong please let me know!!!

Hi Will.

We would not purchase the E1's, we would rent them, $120 per day. But with your advice re Live Professor, the Waves plugin becomes much more realistic.

There are still issues to be addressed - Will the ADAT card for the X32 have access to insert points on every channel of the X32?
And, can one plug in multiple instances of the waves Dugan plugin, to get sixteen channels, and can they be linked to work together? (I suppose a trip to their website would answer that)

I find the Dugan is so useful in my venue that I'm willing to put up with the ugly patching. I'm even considering building a special cable with the XLRs reversed as necessary.

I have found that if you use the channel's direct outs to feed the Dugan on the Aux inserts, you can set the direct out to be post fader, and thus get the ability to disable channels by simply pulling the fader down. I haven't been able to check if this will work with the last two channels, which have to use the weird patch, but I don't see why not.

Glad to know there is someone else interested in this!

Re: Automixer solutions

I'm hoping that in a future firmware release we will be able to insert channel patch via adat post fader and return as well via adat. Hint hint!!!!! This would also allow VST inserts via a host as well. Not really a game changer but very cool and would make this desk the ultimate corporate tool with a Dugan.

Re: Automixer solutions

An entire 32 input console that costs less than a 8 channel Dugan E unit?

You're not asking for much, Mick...

Well, I think it should be capable of inserts on any channel in the firmware. That wouldn't cost too much would it? I wonder which would take more firmware development, adding the inserts or implementing the automixer.
The X32's value for money never ceases to amaze me, believe me.

Thanks for the tip, Chris, BUT;

I tried Live Professor and got the silliest error messages ever;

With the 32-bit version; "Cannot load 64-bit plugin into 32-bit host"
With the 64-bit version; "Cannot load 32-bit plug-in into 64-bit host"

Huh?????

Re: Automixer solutions

Not sure what to make of that. Mac or PC? I had it working with a waves package on a pc a few years ago, haven't messed with it in a while. Maybe post a question on the bolg on the Live Professor website.
