Help an old man catch up on styles.

I went out to listen to a Brasilian samba band last night, one that I've worked with before. Venue was a city park with a couple of young fellas working the gig for the Park Board. I suspect they're used to doing rock although the Parks summer concert series has more than that. Here's the deal....

The kick drum sounded like a screen door slamming. Channel strip EQ on the MixWiz had a 4-5dB boost on the LF and a similar boost applied @ 5K.

Is this what a rock kick is supposed to sound like? I know it didn't fit with the samba band.

Re: B52

What's wrong Dick, don't you like Metsamblica? It does sound like a typical kick EQ for metal kick - lots of low end, big mid scoop, lots of top to bring out the beater click. Of course, They should have been boosting the highs a bit lower near the 2k-3k range to get the click. Of course, without hearing the actual kick through their PA, it's hard to say if it sounded right even for Metal Kick®.

Let's just say that the "screen door rattle" pretty effectively masked the presence of the nylon stringed acoustic guitar........

is this the brazilian/samba group I worked with up here once also?? If so that is a pure shame. I loved those guys.

Adam.....

Very likely the same: Ticket to Brasil led by Pavel Jany

There are other Latin bands that do some Brasilian (Salsabrosa comes to mind) but these guys (TTB) are the real thing and all are monster players.

That was them, Wow... I didn't even use a kick mic on them when they were up here. Just an overhead in case I needed to mix in. Pavel was great to work with. Sad some people don't understand different styles require different sounds.
