Sorry, but on these tapered steel pins any rubber, compothane, etc. hammer does not get it. You don't need the mass, you need the sharp impact of steel to break the press fit the taper creates, and a small enough hammer head to get a swing at it from inside the truss. A clawhammer works fine for me. I expect a small shot filled ball peen would also be excellent.
I've used one of these for years in cabinetmaking, and other various "fine adjustment" operations-although not truss specifically. Would have thought this would be a preferred mallet-less marring of the aluminum.
