CL5 <-> CL5 Editor communication

Re: CL5 <-> CL5 Editor communication

CL Editor is a stand-alone program - it no longer runs within Studio Manager and does not need the DME Driver.

Thanks, Justice.

I'm not a Mac guy, so I don't really know how to test this, but maybe there's a way to tell when connecting the CL Editor to the CL console whether it's using the built-in Network MIDI service or not. Maybe there's a Network MIDI control panel on the Mac? I'm not sure if there's a program like MIDIOx for the Mac that would allow one to see MIDI data? If so, I would use such a program to connect to the CL console and see if any data shows up via the Network MIDI driver.

Sorry I can't say specifically how to test this as I don't even have a Mac computer. If the Network MIDI service existed on Windows and I had a CL console I'd be able to test this myself.

Re: CL5 <-> CL5 Editor communication

Yamaha once attempted to quiet my anxieties about an M7CL locking up apparently while the board op was changing a scene at the same moment that the iPad app was losing contact with the board by saying that the CL console's interface with both the editor and the iPad app was much more robust than the M7CL version. They didn't couch it in terms of no longer using MIDI but the app does not use the Network MIDI control panel required by previous boards. I can't open the CL5 today but upon opening the editor on my Mac today I see no text matching "MIDI" in the console log and no device is configured in the Mac OS 'Audio / MIDI ' configuration app ( in the utilities folder for anyone who wasn't aware of it ). Not a guarantee that MIDI isn't involved but it's not waving a flag if it is. Dunno about the port question. I can turn my ip scanner app loose on it Friday when I get to the board and see what it has to say.

Re: CL5 <-> CL5 Editor communication

It's possible I suppose that Yamaha has done away with MIDI for the CL5 and iPad apps, but it would surprise me. All of their previous efforts used MIDI SysEx to communicate and MIDI support is built into every Yamaha audio/music product made.

Again, I'm quite ignorant of the workings of OSX and iOS, but my thought was that once the CL Editor is connected to a CL5 you might see something in this window on the Mac?

Re: CL5 <-> CL5 Editor communication

Maybe I'm way off base on this one, but I would think that if the CL5 uses the same MIDI network service that their other consoles use, that you wouldn't be able to connect both the CL5 Editor and the CL5 Stage Mix app the same time...?

I've sent a note to a code hacker friend of mine who has written third party software for all of Yamaha's other consoles to see if he knows.

Re: CL5 <-> CL5 Editor communication

I can pull that MIDI network window up on Friday when I have the console hooked up and see if it populates. Certainly doesn't when just the editor is open.

Re: CL5 <-> CL5 Editor communication

The Mac MIDI network config panel does not populate when the computer is connected to a CL5 and my IP scanner app doesn't display any port numbers or anything beyond the basic IP address. Trying to create a session by entering IPs of computer, console and an adjacent IP had no effect. Its now above my pay grade.
