Countryman DI Question

This was mentioned in the other DI thread, but instead of further hi jacking that thread, I thought I would start a new one.

It was mentioned that the Type 85 DI will not function, even on phantom power, if the battery is dead or "going dead". It will function if the battery is removed. Is that true? It has not been my experience after years of use. How in the world could a dead or weak battery prevent the unit from working on phantom power and why would anyone design a unit to do that?

Re: Countryman DI Question

I am apprehensive about speculating without looking at the actual design (but it hasn't stopped me before).

I doubt it was an intentional operating mode. I can imagine a design constraint where to completely float the pin 1 ground connection, the front end needs power independent of phantom power that can't work without the ground return connection. Perhaps some automatic PS switch that only uses phantom when it detects that no battery is present (guess?).

Carl is too dead to answer, so I can't say "call Countryman."

I only know what Carl actually said, and I can confirm that if you have bad battery in a FET85, the DI will not work no matter how much current is available. The hows and whys? I don't know.
