Crown XTi 2 series

Re: Crown XTi 2 series

While we'd all love to have a cheapo amplifier with network capability, I don't think anyone will ever do it for several reasons. Crown wants people to have a reason to buy the I-Techs, most JV guys aren't running enough amps to warrant Ethernet, and on top of that, half the people that buy XTis don't even use the DSP!

Silas has a point... I can second, that there are plenty of users not using the XTi's to the fullest and they are using the DRPA processing instead.

Re: Crown XTi 2 series

Guess I'm one of the few that use the dsp in the XTI. I have IT and XTI's and use the dsp all the time.

I just heard that the XTI2 price is gonna drop, so that they are more competitive with the crest and peavey ipr.

Re: Crown XTi 2 series

Looks like they might have fixed the severe limiter shortcomings of the previous XTi series. They won't be on the street for a while, but we can surmise (drool?) over the performance until then.

Have you had limiter problems with XTi amps when used at full line voltage ?. I've noticed that even 5% undervolt makes XTis limit like crazy but haven't seen this phenomenon with solid power. (Still fairly useless to have an amp that cannot tolerate a bit of low power)

Re: Crown XTi 2 series

I use the XTi DSP, and like it. Where I need an IT, I use an IT. Where I use an XTi, I generally wouldn't use the extra features of the IT. So I appreciate that they have different products with different feature sets that are priced accordingly.

Re: Crown XTi 2 series

USB again? Gawd... Seems everyone is networked these days (as demonstrated by this board...) sigh...

When the limiter is set on the current XTI, it is anything but graceful. Damn ugly comes to mind. For that reason, the current limiter is beyond useless. I can't describe how awful it sounds.

Otherwise, I like, and use, the DSP constantly - and like to monitor amp world from FOH - proactive identification of thermal problems, input/output clipping, and some EQ tweaking. Doung through the whole TCP/IP to USB thing is less than totally reliable, and is a PITA.

I'd like to go ITEC, but just can't justify the cost.

Re: Crown XTi 2 series

Sorry for digging up this old thread - it just seemed as good a place as any to vent about the new "improved" faceplates on the series 2 Xti's. I've got several of the original Xti's and needed more so rather than buy old stock I went with the new improved version. My gripe is the faceplate material. It's weak and if left unsupported on the rear it will break. It appears to be made of pot metal or something like it that can't take bouncing around in the back of a trailer without rear support. All 4 of my faceplates broke and were dangling by the top screws at an angle and the bottom part of the faceplate is gone - broke - caput.

So for those that have the new Xti's - use the rear supports. ugh

How's the new limiters? I've never heard any opinions on them yet.

Those faceplates are made of finest Chinese magnesium alloys... you must be doing something wrong. (-:

+1... I was thinking of using these amps as backups. Thanx for the faceplate warning though.

Wow. Epic fail on Crown's part. Thanks for the heads up, I will avoid these like the plague.

I wouldn't go that far. The features are pretty spiffy and the new limiter thingy seems to be a few notches up from the simple -3, -6, -9 etc. settings on the originals. Just saying that in their effort to make it look different from the others they should have splurged and used something that would bend and not break. I seem to recall reading that the new lite Peaveys need to be rear braced to keep them from bending too.

Is there another amp out there with equal or better features for less money?
Has the Peavey DSP type ever materialized or is it still pending?
Anyone else make a lite amp with programable DSP stuff - savable presets etc????

You might have heard about Peavey bending from me. I don't recall how I bent mine, but I bent it back. The IPR 1600 and 3000 (w/ DSP) have been shipping for quite a while. Who knows when the other models will materialize. Unless you can live with Speakon only with no 4 conductor or bridge capability, hold out for the Crest version. Speaking of Crest, they haven't even had a "news" update on their website about 7 months, much less any new product info. hmm.
