Hey everyone! Long time reader here, first time poster. First off great forum here! I'm definitely going to be trying my hand on building my own monitors and subs... BUT, I want to try and get it right the first time... I need to understand more about the lingo, the formulas for box volume, ports, etc. etc.

I own the old Radio Shack book on building speakers. I also own the Building Pro Audio Loudspeaker Enclosures by Jeffery Forsburg.

I'd like to expand my knowledge even further. Jeffery's book is great as far as how to build boxes, but not the specifics of why when it comes to size, shape, etc.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome Karl.

You'll probably find that there are a ton of good designs out there which will accomplish whatever goal you might have. You can learn a ton just by going through some build threads, and by making your own sawdust. Some things are a lot clearer when you actually do them, and modeled response does not always translate in the real world the way you might hope, especially in more complex designs.

Aside from books, check out some of the build threads here, as well as over on the speakerplans.com forum. You'll learn a ton and see lots of examples of successes, and more importantly, the failures which are great learning opportunities.

Best of luck as you start into this!

Hi Jeff!

Thanks for the Welcome statement... It's always been a curiosity thing for me... I love woodworking (built my bathroom counter/cabinets) as well as a money saving option for saving money on speakers themselves... Which at this point with my rig (small hobby/regional pa type rig) is becoming a necessity... I feel also I don't really have the luxury of trying different boxes etc till I get it right... Hence why I want to be educated... plus it can't hurt...
