I think the 'standard' base is a b-50 right?

That is 1-1/2" thread OD or pipe?

I need to go get some pipe. Last time I was able to just buy from SEAL. I seem to recall when I went to the metal shop the pipe was greasy or not painted or some ish. Is it iron pipe or steel? Details on what to ask for to get the right stuff please!

1-1/2" schedule 40 black iron pipe is the standard in the theatrical industry. The oil is likely left over from threading or cutting.

Re: dumb question about schedule 40

Is that the ID of the thread or the actual pipe?

Neither. It's the nominal size. (It was the ID at some point in the past, before steel strengths were well understood, when the walls were thicker. When the manufacturers found they could thin the walls and have sufficient strentgh, they did. As the threads are external, they could not change the OD) [actual ID is 1.61 inches]
