Custom furniture can be built quickly using hollow-core oak doors. Yea when you cut them to length, you have to fit and glue a piece of pine to seal it back up. (because it's hollow)

You get something that has a better appearance vs 3/4'' plywood, and you have something that has a reasonable weight. I use 2'' thick oak that I use a fine kerf blade to get 1/4'' thick strips to trim out with.

Thought I'd share the tip.

Nice!

We are trying to figure out how to outfit our second studio (which heretofore has been a storage room) and I was just thinking how I'd like a thicker look than 3/4'' ply.

How much do veneered hollow-core doors cost these days?

I just bought a bunch at Home Depot for $50 each, not for an install but for a house.
