Electronic Mixing Desk System Research

Hi,

I am currently in college and I am doing my thesis around the area of sound engineering and mixing desk technologies. I am conducting a survey that is a series of Yes/No questions and takes less than a minute to complete. I would really appreciate it if any sound engineers out there would take it or pass it on to sound engineers that you know.

Thank you very much. Here is the link: College Sound Engineering Survey

Fran,

This forum's readership has a long history of supporting students of professional audio, many of our current posters (myself included) have lived their entire careers in these environs. This is, however, a discussion forum and a little dialog is more than expected. This seems like you're asking us to do your homework for you, which might be tolerated from a friendly face, but this is your first post and you just registered this account. Doesn't give us much incentive, or any expectation that you might some day help keep the discussion moving with another in the same position you once were (which is the whole point).

Fran...kly, these questions are close to meaningless in the real world of work, especially considering the incredibly broad spectrum of what "sound engineers" are tasked with.

Re: Electronic Mixing Desk System Research

No offense, Fran, but if you read almost any of the articles that you should know how to research at this point and looked at some of the higher tiers of gear, they'd give you all the answers you need. I second the "yes, and it already exists" response above. To be honest, I feel as though I'd ask these questions only if I didn't already know that stuff like this existed on many pieces of gear. I'd really suggest researching your topic more in depth before you submit that paper.

For example... question 6 is instantly answered when you know that there are in fact monitor engineers for this very purpose, and that if FoH is more than 50 feet away from the stage (aka pretty much everywhere), it would be frustrating. You'd also know this if you had ever been in that situation. I know that you're trying to do research because you don't understand it, but I think you'd find far more help by finding a few local engineers and asking to shadow them for a day or perhaps interviewing them, as well as researching at length what is already out there.

I was under the impression that this is what he is trying to do? OK, so some of the questions are a bit naïve, but the comments here will surely steer him right. If the forum administrator doesn't want this kind of thing here, I can respect that, but for the rest of us if we don't want to waste our time, we are free to ignore this topic.
As for "Yes, it already exists (and we are using it)", I guess what we are saying is that the survey needs some rewording to be at all meaningful.
