EV MTL-2 replacement driver

I have an EV MTL-2 sub that needs replacement drivers. I can't seem to find the EVX-180 drivers. Anyone know where i can find them? What would be a good substitute driver?

Re: EV MTL-2 replacement driver

I'd guess the EVX 180B might be acceptable and it is readily available.

Otherwise, I'd look for a replacement speaker that had as close to the TS parameters and power handling as the ones you have.
EVX 180A specs:
1000 w continuous
18.3 lbs
fs = 29.0 Hz
Re = 5.0 ohms
Qts = 0.266
Qms = 4.00
Qes = 0.285
Vas = 416 liters
So = 0.122 m^2
xmax = 6.4 mm

Re: EV MTL-2 replacement driver

the 180b would be great, I would prefer new drivers...Rick, you say they are readily available, any insight as to where? Or do i just need to find a dealer?

Re: EV MTL-2 replacement driver

The box actually has the OLD DL18 MT Drivers in it. It has been in the back corner of a garage for probably 15 years and they are completely dead. I wanted to put the newer more efficient drivers in it. With that being said, re-coning is not really an option. But if anyone has a suggestion for a better driver for this box than the EVX-180b i would be interested to know. i can find the 180a on ebay "used" for $229 each.

Re: EV MTL-2 replacement driver

After looking pretty hard, i have found the drivers for about $350/ea. Without having heard the box before, i am somewhat hesitant to sink $700 into a single sub box. My plans were to be able to send it out as a single sub with one of my smaller bar/DJ rigs. From what i am reading around the web, the MTL-2 may not perform well as a single box, but performs well in pairs. Anyone have any insight on this?

Re: EV MTL-2 replacement driver

Richard,

I've spent a lot of time on these subs with EV180B woofers in them and had a lot of fun, they tune up very well and as long as you're not looking for much below 40 the massive headroom at 50Hz is great for many genres.

If the existing woofers are dead, I would go with whatever EV was using as their best woofer before discontinuing the cabinet. I believe that would be the 180B, a really outstanding woofer for its day. There's no reason to pay a premium for outdated woofers, however, but you're going to have some difficulty fitting in the latest crop of subwoofers as they are all very deep baskets which will likely not fit. Our 18TBX100 likely will, although I can make no promises, and would be a pretty stout woofer for that sub. Alternatively, the 18PS100 is a good sub driver at reduced cost.

Re: EV MTL-2 replacement driver

I recently replaced my EVX 180bs in another cabinet with the Faital Pro 18FH510 woofer, and I am absolutely thrilled with the results, I A-Bed them with another cabinet with the original EVX 180bs still loaded in it and I could not tell the difference to my ear both sonically and efficiency related. I am sure a sonic analyzer would know the difference... but I have not taken it that far.

Faital makes a bunch of woofers that have more power but I decided on the 510 because it specced very closely to the 180b. so far i have purchased 6 of them and plan on using more in the future.

Re: EV MTL-2 replacement driver

Hi all,
I just reply to this post because i have the same question.
I need to replace the original drivers on MTL2 subwoofers which included the old DL18MT drivers. 400W each driver.

Currently i have the following drivers: BEYMA 18P1000fe (1000W AES) which i can use to replace the DL18MT

But im Wondering about if there is any problem about the volume liters of the MTL2 or they can suffer from this amount of power. (800W original replaced by 2000W now!)

I show you some specific data about the two drivers. Can i have any problem as to much pressure for the box or bad frecuency resonations? Could you recomend me anything please?

Diferency of SPL between the Original drivers and the Replacements Beyma. +6dB SPL!
Am i gona blow up the full box? :S
Or sound bad?

Victor,

The Beyma don't have much more Xmax than the EVX180B, so no problems with "blowing up the box", unless the box is falling apart already.
The extra power handling does not control excursion, so they may not sound great at full power, where they probably will exceed Xmax.
The sensitivity specs have little to do with anything, as they are just an average over different frequency ranges, in box I doubt the Beyma is actually more sensitive in the pass band than the EV.

Without modeling the enclosure (or comparing old speakers to new) can't say how well they will work, the speakers have quite different TS parameters, though the DL18MT and the EVX180B also have quite different parameters and both work OK in the box.

Re: EV MTL-2 replacement driver

Hi, thanks Art Welter,

I see that:

EVX180 and DT18M are much similar than my Beyma replacements... :?~:-?~:???:

DT18M
XMAX 1: ...................................................................... 5.59 mm (0.22 in.)
Volume Displacement (SD x XMAX): ................................................ 0.725 liters (0.0256 ft3)

EVX180 PE(max): .................................................................................. 600 watts
fS : .............................................................................................. 29 Hz
VAS: ......................................................................... 416 liters (14.7 ft3)

SD: .......................................................................... 0.122 m2 (189 in.2)
XMAX 1: ........................................................................ 6.4 mm (0.25 in.)

Volume Displacement (SD x XMAX): 0.781 liters

While the Beyma have:
Resonant frequency, fs .................. 40 Hz
Equivalent Air Volume to Cms, Vas ....... 163.2 l
Effective Surface Area, Sd (m2).......... 0.1250 m2
Maximum Displacement, Xmax*** .......... 8 mm
Volume Displacement (SD x XMAX): .............. 1000 cm3 = 1 liters

So its 25% more volume displacement!
Then, look at the Vas. I dont know what it means but does it matter the high diference?

And what about the high resonant frequency fs? its higher than where i cut the subs (above 35 hz)

25% more displacement is good, but not a huge deal- takes 100% more displacement to increase level 6 dB.

In this case the lower Vas and higher Fs of the Beyma should be OK, the MLT-2 Fb is 37 Hz, not too much below the Fs.

You have the drivers, put them in, EQ to taste.
