I'm not really a fan of the band, but I must say that the new Maroon 5 album called Hands All Over is one of the best mixed and mastered recordings I have heard in quite a while.

JHall from the PSW recording forums turned me on to this album, and it is produced to a very high standard.

Worth noting is that Brad Blackwood did the mastering. For those that don't know, Brad has a PSW forum that he moderates on the recording side. Hats off to him.

You don't have to like the band to recognize a job well done.

Anybody else been impressed with an album lately?

Jeff Beck - Emotion & Commotion released April 2010
It's not brand new, and it is an eclectic mix that surprised me at first.
It is so well done and has a huge appeal across age groups ( even my mom likes it ).
The extended dynamic range is a welcome change from the squashed norm.

Re: Excellent sounding album - a rare jem

I took a listen to the Maroon 5 album and loaded the waveforms. There's still a lot of industry loudness-war, balls-to-the-wall normalization and mastering going on on this cd. Not as bad as a Chris Daughtry album but it's still there.

Sure, it's there. Given that this is a mainstream pop album geared for radio etc I think it pretty much HAS to be there so some degree based on expectations, not to mention the desire to avoid being subject to the comparatively crappy limiters used by most radio stations.

But nevertheless, it absolutely sounds amazing for an album in this genre. Mutt, Mike, and Brad put together a great combined effort. I've had plenty of recording & mixing experience and been proud of a few things, but I will certainly admit defeat here. There is no way that I (or anyone I have worked with for that matter) could put out something of remotely comparable quality.

Hey Jeff
Ship mixed the new Allison Krauss and Union Station record due out in April. Can't wait.

Hmm...need to check this out. I loved SAJ and thought the production was great. At the risk of getting slammed, I think Taylor Swift's records sound great. Yes, some of her stuff is pop but some is also good country/folky rock.
I don't hear the crazy 5 db crammed vox comp or all the digital fx overuse like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.

Some other recent stuff that sound good to me:

Nickel Creek
Colbie Caillet
Perishers
Blue Rodeo
Sarah McLachlan
last Eagles CD
