Favorite fly rack

Re: Favorite fly rack

I have a 1U dual-channel UHFR system I want to put in a very portable rack for rentals and such. I probably want pouches or something for the handhelds and antennas, plus a 1U rack rail to mount the receiver.

What's everyone using for this?

Have you seen the Gator soft racks (I think) Sennheiser is using for their wireless packages? A local AV shop has them, pretty slick. Rack compartment for receivers/antenna distribution, top loading compartment with foam cutouts for transmitters and accessories.

They're nice. The smallest they offer is the GRB-2U with two rack spaces. Full Compass has them.

Edit:

They make a version with an extendable handle and casters. It has "W" appended to the model #.

Wood racks inside pelicans. Have been using these for a touring fly rig and production fly rigs for a few years and they have surpassed everything we used in the past.

In almost 10 years and nearly 400 flights, I've only ever had one Pelican damaged and zero contents damaged. This doesn't include countless abuse trips courtesy of FedEx and UPS. Almost all of the rack bags I've ever owned eventually ended up in the trash (or should be headed there soon).

Re: Favorite fly rack

The zipper gator bags are fine. I have a 3U one that has space on the top section for 4 mics and belt packs. Great when you need to carry with the strap, but a pain when stacking on other road cases. Also, the zipper eventually started giving me grief. I've now switched to a standard rack with drawer. Not quite as portable, but it plays along better with the rest of my stuff and is way easier to keep clean.

Yes. And if Silas were flying this little wireless mic rig, I'd say right-o. For local carry rentals the bag is fine.

Silas did specifically say "fly rack" in his title. And with a piece of kit as costly as a UHF-R and all its accessories, I'd be much more comfortable sending it out racked in a pelican than a rack bag - I have no doubt that dry rentals can be just as abusive as any baggage handler. But, each to his (or her) own.

Re: Favorite fly rack

I prefer a Fly tray when I try to put the Flies on a rack they just all fall thru. Or are you not cooking them and you mean a medieval torture device so you can stretch the Flies till they talk. I have never had success with getting a Fly to talk.

Or am I completely misinterpreting your post? :)

Re: Favorite fly rack

...Most TSA don't understand how to close a butterfly latch and we kept having gear come out at baggage with no lids on the racks.
Exactly! But the problem with hinge lids like the Pelican is that they WILL close the lid on any cables you carry in the case. Make sure you have a way to secure cables inside the case to help avoid this issue.

One of the downsides of the TSA being a separate entity from the airline is that they can point fingers at each other when something gets damaged and they both skirt responsibility!
