When a company says they designed a speaker for a folded horn cabinet what will happen if you put it in a front loaded ported cabinet?

I'm throwing these speakers in some programing and getting a big spike in the impedance at 60 hz, does this have something to do with the speaker being designed for a folded box?

start here Thiele/Small - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia then try to learn as much as you can absorb about Thiele Small perimeters. I know the math is 'heavy' but once you have even a small grasp you may realize you have the answer to your question.

Folded horns have an interesting "history" of drivers.

Historically (70/80's ish) the idea that most everybody was using (that I am aware of) was lightweight drivers and drivers that did not go particularly low.

However Tom Danley has been using in various designs (the first was the LAB Sub) drivers that had a high motor strength and a heavy cone-with lots of excursion and the drivers (when used in a regular ported box) went pretty low.

So the question begs "when a driver says it is designed to be used in a folded horn cabinet" which "style" of driver are they talking about?

While a lot may appear to be "the same", the driver and the cabinet are very much interwoven in the design. One mistake that MANY people make-is to replace the driver in a well designed cabinet with another driver that they "think" is a better driver. Better for what is the real question. Yes it may be "better" in a ported box-but what about the particular design in question?

There are a lot more than basic specs that need to be looked at with horn design. It is not a trival thing.

Re: Few questions on 18'' speakers.

I have Lab 12 drivers in a small vented box and the sound great, go low if not super loud.
There are a number of people using the lab12 drivers in ported cabinets. It also works well in horn loaded cabinets.

A good example of a driver that can be used in either type of cabinet.

I personally am going to use 4 of the lab12's (2 per cabinet) in my new office speakers-a pair of Kustom red sparkle 4x12". The labs are for the lows and a B&C 12" coax is for the mid/high. I will have to do a bit of modifications to seal off the coax and add bracing to stiffen the cabinets. They should be pretty cool.

Sorry to go off topic.
