Long story short, I've been playing email tag for the past week with the local fire marshal over "Cryo Effects" He only asks one question in each email like "whats a nozzle", "whats a jet", "whats an electromechanical solenoid", "whats the specs on the nozzle", "is it UL listed", "do you have a user manual"! These questions all came after I furnished an MSDS for the system and Co2.

This guy was legit being a douche and even made the analogy that he can make a car in his back yard but doesn't mean he could drive it on the street!

Now before anyone goes on a tangent about human health and safety, that is my first and foremost concern no matter what aspect you look at it from; rigging 1000 lbs of rig or asphyxiation.

Job Justification? Anyone else run into guys like this?

PS. His name was actually Bill.

Re: Fire Marshal Bill

They're out there. It takes a special type to be a bureaucrat, and there are a number of things on the books that are technically legal, but are procedurally so difficult, they are virtually impossible to get done.

This was the case with hand gun carry permits - you could apply for one, but it was up to the county sheriff's discretion to grant it to you or not, depending on whether he liked you, liked guns, liked the weather, etc. Legislation had to be crafted to make this objective - if you're not a convicted felon, you get the permit.

If this guy says no or stalls you too long, your only recourse would be some kind of civil suit claiming discrimination, or something like that.

Hello,

Did the Fire Marshall ask to see a demonstration of your rig?

Is this for a permanent install, or, a one time gig?

While he has a concern that the Co2 is vented and make-up air is brought into the venue, he should know that it's not a high risk situation.

Are these nozzles protected from being touched by, (or aimed towards) show go-ers to prevent burns?

Are all of your Co2 system's components rated ? Did you make any of the components, or are they all "off the shelf" rated, appropriate parts?

If you can be confident that the components are appropriate to the task, that no one could be harmed by the Co2, and can demonstrate a safe system, He's definitely being a douche.

In regards to his analogy....mention to him "just because someone has a badge....doesn't mean that the person is qualified to perform the job". ;o)

Get everything in writing.... and in writing, ask him for his specific concerns.

Good Luck,
Hammer
