For all you Yamaha digital fans.

Re: For all you Yamaha digital fans.

Yikes, I guess they decided they could lose the space and not use a Midas solution again this year? That was real slick, I hate to think of how they're splitting that out this year.

Different country, different production team, different solution, I guess. I have no idea on the hows and whys. Funny photo, though!

Kick in, kick out, kick top, kick bottom, snare in, snare out, snare top, snare bottom............. we'll get to 1200 somehow... :-)
I have always preferred the sound of my kicks mic'd from the top. I find that a KM184 does a nice job of micing the drum throne, too.

1,200 audio signals? Ok - kick in, kick out, snare top, snare bottom...

Eurovision song contest is huge:

Maybe 50 acts of singback, all wireless, with all wireless IEM.

Huge areas of green rooms and dressing rooms all filled with people needing to both follow what's going on on stage as well as how they are doing in their home country as well as being available for the press for their own country as well as other people's countries.

Live commentary as well as visiting reporters and TV hosts from every participating nation, complete with translation for like 50 nations, and live feeds with national scores coming in from all participating nations.

Not to mention, it's all in an international environment with a bunch of languages everywhere.

Unfortunately I was not part of this whole circus when Norway hosted it last year, but I would have loved to be.

Without exception it's a showcase of some of the newest and best technology available as there is an "arms race" to show the preceeding year's host nation what you can do.

Also, due to the main state broadcastors in almost all nations airing the show the quality requirements are very high.

Almost every year they break the previous suspended overhead load record.

I heard something about 380+ IEM/green room/dressing room/listening mixes last year...

And still, the most entertaining part of watching the whole show is to make fun of some of the hair dues, costumes and out-of-key vocals :D

I just read a long article in a german magazine about the setup:
Every console had a dedicated, mirrored backup console.
One (two if you include backup) each for
- Moderators and general sound sources (PM5D)
- artists wireless and playback (PM5D)
- EFX (PM5D)
- InEars (PM1D)
Plus a few additional M7CL, DM2000, 01V96 and DME64 thrown in for different duties.
I especially liked the idea of a PM1D in the InEar fitting room for the sole purpose to create the mix for the artists, store it on a memory card and then upload it to the monitor consoles...

PA was a massive mixed d&b system powered by 165 D12s.
They had a 60 m x 18 m LED screen behind the stage, which was even movable!!!
More than 1000 motors to fly all the equipment.
8x grandMA 2
6x 1.25 kVA Aggreko generators (sound, light & video) plus a few additional ones for broadcast, press center...

All in all a very impressive setup...
