Re: Frat house sub installation recommendations As someone about to go to college next year, I've been thinking through some of this. (Just in case I need it... :p ) David has the right idea - a pair of solid two way monitors are great. However, as Tim said, it's not all low end that creates thump. I personally find it in the area right between lower midrange and true lows, but is more dependent on how the material itself was mixed. Anyway - point is... get a beefy pair of two way monitors (like the KRK Rokit 8s) and if that's not enough low end for you, add the matching sub. Embarrassing as it is, I personally use a recycled Samsung Home Theater system that I process through GarageBand. It's not fantastic, but it's good enough to reach 95dBA+ in my bedroom and get my parents mad, all while sounding plenty fine with somewhere around 5% THD and only 3 dollars invested.
