Funky Stradivarius

Re: Funky Stradivarius

Their special sound is partly due to the use of a special type of wood that is no longer available. Turns out existing wood kight aquire the same properties as the original wood using simple fungus. Who would have thought?

How a Simple Fungus Might Resurrect the Legendary Stradivarius Violin

Add that to the list of many many things people have touted as "the" thing that makes Stradivarius violins so great sounding.

There have been revelations about the varnish, including the mineral content. Interestingly, no one is *exactly* sure what Stradivarius and his contemporaries used.

There have been revelations about the old-growth wood

About the quality of the water that the lumber was floated on

About the use of various substances to prepare the wood

About the design/acoustics of the instruments themselves

About the craftsmanship, particularly with Stradivarius.

I think it's a combination of all those things, but it is also the psychology: Live Sound: Purple Sounds Best: A Matter Of Mass Psychology - Pro Sound Web

The radio story that first made me aware of the fungus-discovery stated that we now know that the original fungus formed when the wood was "trapped and wet" during the last ice age! The fungus reportedly lets the cells of the wood rot, leaving hollow spaces lined with hardened fungus.

That reminds me of the incident at the great European Genaeologic Conference of '72. All the national representatives made presentations regarding their descent from the common ancestor, or "Ur-mother". When it came time for the representative from Norway to speak he stood up and said, " We didn't come from anywhere. The ice melted and THERE WE WERE!!!!!"

Would that constitute a virgin birth? :D
