grumpy sound men

Re: grumpy sound men

I know a house engineer at a club who has been caught playing guitar along with the live band through PA uninvited on numerous occasions.

Re: grumpy sound men

a) The article has a decent premise, but falls flat.
2) Can it apply to designers too? Someone is mr grumpy pants on the infocom thread.

Re: grumpy sound men

Yup. The band can't really see him but they are vaguely hearing him in the foh. He is smart enough to put his leads in the foh but not in the monitors. He is a decent musician so his playing isn't horrible but his common sense and respect are far gone. First time I figured it out, it felt equivalently wrong to seeing a high price wedding band lip syncing at my nieces wedding in NYC. She came over to gush about how good the band sounded. I smiled and and bit my tongue in disbelief.

Re: grumpy sound men

On average he was solid but frequently drunk and inappropriately strange. Can you imagine being a band member? It is bad enough when the sound guy is bad or grumpy.... This is wildly off the beaten path. He is brazen, bored and drunk. It reminds me of the owner of a club in cambridge who used to jump on stage with many acts to play cowbell without asking. At least he was cute and enthusiastic. Or even stranger and true, a folk club owner who would for many years would preface every show with the profoundly sad story of his dead baby's natural demise (who only lived for a few hours after birth) .
Its hard to follow that kind of introduction...." Our babies dead so lets listen to some music by these nice musicians". It was surreal, heart breaking and sad. Great people putting everything out for all to see but an unusual performance choice that dampened every show. This world of ours is special place.

Hey Dan,
Good to see your name around here... I stumbled across a documentary recently made (in the last year or so) about that club / owner / baby. That was definitely a strange place and time, but pretty amazing experience when I first stumbled into the club.

I hope to be working with you again before too long.
