Has anybody ever had an item manufactured for you?

Re: Has anybody ever had an item manufactured for you?

If it's for your own use then use the appropriate local engineer etc if it's for national sale then there'll be certification issues etc as well as any patent stuff JR is probably the man to ask on this forum I suspect G

Re: Has anybody ever had an item manufactured for you?

I'm thinking of an analog mixer. A pretty simple one, but with a specific feature set and layout that doesn't exist right now.

I have absolutely ZERO experience getting something like this done, but I think there would definitely be a niche for this product. I'm just curious about what I might expect to find along the route of taking my idea to finished product. Does a Patent do anything when you are dealing with offshore production? What kind of minimums am I expected to order? Plus a million questions I haven't thought of yet.

Or, do you think it would be easier to patent the idea and try to sell it to the many manufacturers that already exist?

Re: Has anybody ever had an item manufactured for you?

If you are serious I can probably share some appropriate experience, I have 9 patents or so, and have been to China working with contract manufacturers, before.

There are lots of people who would love to help you build stuff... the hard part is ending up with more money than you started with.

A US patent only protects you against infringement in the US, and even then you generally have to sue. I am currently involved peripherally in a patent dispute between my old employer (who I assigned the patent to) and another well known manufacturer who liked my idea so much he got his own similar patent. This one will mainly make some lawyers rich, it won't do me any good.

You may have a million dollar idea, but odds are you don't. If you are really serious PM me and we can talk. I know the ins and outs, but be warned they are mostly outs.

PS: I even worked at Peavey for a while as the guy who had to review outside idea submissions... :-( I never saw one that made my cut. As a favor I have looked at some ideas for friends of friends, they also got let down gently, but what would i know?
