I have a 22ut that I bought for just to try it out. We are using it on an acoustic guitar. It's really bright. Much brighter than the condensers I've used there before and much brighter than the AT3035 we use as our main mic. The rest of the range sounds good but it seems to have a lot of boost from 2k up, like in an unnatural and strange way. I would say on vocals it's actually painfully sharp.

Does this run through the line or should I check with Heil?

Mark,

Kudos for giving the A/T 3035 a chance - it's one of my favorite LDCs...very transparent and uncolored.

Preferences for microphones and their particular timbres can ignite tempers, but I'll put in my thoughts:

The Heil PR22 is a mic you have to get used to hearing, but not in the usual way. Whenever I use mine, it takes very little (if any) EQ to achieve the desired results. The mic sounds very natural to me, not like you're speaking into a mic. Here's a good review from the "old" forum (and no, I'm not Andy Peters' wife, though I do agree with her).

Thanks, I've loved the 3035 for years. Maybe I'll compare my 22ut with several others at my dealer. Maybe I have a bum mic.

Re: Heil 22ut

Hmmm, I have the PR20 (which I thought is supposed to sound identical to your PR22) and I thought almost the opposite- seems to have a stronger lo-mid woodier sound kinda thing, definitely not as bright as a Shure Beta series and certainly not as much as most condensers. I haven't used it a ton, but that was my impression from using it on vocals, snare, banjo, and I think an amp once.

Another +1 on the AT3035, awesome bang for the buck workhorse.

I have to ask although I'm sure you did. Did you compare all microphones with the desk eq flat? Having a eq set for one mic then testing others could have thrown your results. I wouldn't call them bright. More just clear.

Yes, should not be overly bright. It's a very well balanced mic. I wouldn't have thought of trying it on an acoustic though. How does it sound on voice?

I have used it on several voices and it sounds good. On the right voice it is great. I like it on my voice. I have that “radio voice” if you will, full and deep. It really shines with my type of pipes. You can swallow it and not get that huge proximity effect like an SM58. I used it with an opera singer working with Paul Mercer and The Ghosts Project and she loved how it sounded with her voice. Again, a very full set of pipes. (She also like the gold grill I put on it just for her) I have the “regular” PR22 that comes with all the bling.

Funny story, a guy I work with often was on the desk setting up an artist and he just hated it. I could see his frustration from across the room so I walked over and asked what his boggle was. His response, “I hate this thing. Look how I had to EQ it to sound like an SM58.” Hmm, Here's your sign.

As has been stated above, it is a very well balance mic. Natural sounding, not hyped and very clear. It shocks many who first use it because they have not heard their voice that way before. But again, it all depends on the voice behind it.
