How do you carry your mic stands?

Hi guys,

I know this has been discussed a few times , but I'm curious to see how everyone is currently carrying their mic stands and tripod speaker stands.

Currently I'm using on stage bags, which works nice for small gigs, but for larger stand counts is a pain in the neck, not to mention they don't last very long. I usually ride a few of the bags on top of my subs or a road case.

I'm using a ford e350 extended with extended roof for transport so size & portability.

thoughts? ideas?

lets discuss!

I am using the same , on stage bags I have about 3 or 4. I will admit that I would love to have them all in one bag . I can get the road case for them but just don't have the room in my trailer .

Re: How do you carry your mic stands?

Nick,

I finally bought a 5 x 8 trailer with enough headroom to put an overhead rack in for tripod speaker stands, lighting bars, and shade umbrella.

Mic stands go in a custom case, 11.25" x 22.5" x 35", fits a dozen inside, and a kick stand outside (not pictured in the photo). I also use four Latin Percussion "Claws" for drums, save a lot of space in the pack and on small stages.

If you are only using tripod mic stands, an easy, expandable system that protects the stands is to use PVC pipes with end caps glued on the bottom, then ratchet strap them together top and bottom. Easy to haul quite a pile in one trip on a two wheel dolly that way. You could also screw them to strips of plywood, make an "8 pack" to fit over each wheel well if a circular bundle does not fit well in your load.

Art,

that is a really cool case, I know Rob spence had made something kind of like that also.... i'm going to measure to see if that would work in my van...

Re: How do you carry your mic stands?

Mark I: I had a trolley (as in L shape) with a cage built onto the front lip. And all mics stands in there. Problem is that they got scratched up real bad.

Mark II: I bought white plumbing pipes of sufficient diameter to accept a K&M boom stand. Cut pipes to length; made 15 of them in 3 rows of 5; then went to a metal engineering shop with another trolley and tubes and asked them to make a cage sized for the tubes. This has been working for about 10 years now I think.

Here's my big stand case. I have 25 tall tripod boom stands, 25 short, and 8 round base straight stands in it, plus extra mic clips and some odds and ends like stereo bars and things. It's great for most of the shows I do, but it's a beast.

I also have one of these for smaller shows: http://www.audiopile.net/MC-550

Re: How do you carry your mic stands?

The single most important thing when transporting your mic stands is to make SURE all the thumb screws, clutches, and whatever other fasteners are on it are all snugged up tight. If you leave a screw loose, the chances are very good that the vibration from transporting the stand from here to there will cause that screw to fall out and land in the bottom of the case somewhere. Likewise, it drives me nuts to reach into a tube and grab the top of a stand to lift it out of the case and the bottom of the stand stays in the bottom of the case while the top of the stand extends up as I lift it. If everything is properly snugged up these things do not happen. Your stands live a nice, comfortable life and keep all their thumb screws and fasteners in place.

I use an On-Stage bag. It fits for tall and 4 short tripod stands. Works for 90% of my gigs.

Re: How do you carry your mic stands?

SKB Golf club case. $50 off craigslist. Works with tripods and could probably fit round base stands with bases taken off. Different sizes from golf club case to a golf club bag case, which I got for $50 as well for hauling our ex-drummer's hardware (vs. it being loose in the car and on the dolly...

Indeed.

Sometimes I think that the phrase "please tighten all screws and stays on the mic stands BEFORE you load them in the tubes" is a language completely and utterly unheard by stagehands.

That, and "this side up. PLEASE"...
