You are correct, it is known as a push-pull design. The distortion is reduced because the odd harmonics are filtered out.

It is a DTH218b. I had 4 of them for some time.
Very clean sounding sub. Took allot of power to make them come alive. At least 2000 watts rms was a good match. Yes one of the woofers was wired out of polarity compared to the other one. A good sub.
The spec sheet shows it with foam on the grill but that feature never made it to the production run.
