I had bought a used mixer from a friend without a manual. I had downloaded the manual from behringer, but it doesn't give specific instructions on how to hook-up this mixer. I would like someone that have a dj system to please give me some advice on how to hook-up this mixer. I am a novice in djing hook-up. Thanks.

Dear Gerald.....

I would recommend using the proper cables.......

This is easy.

Step 1: Get some insulated wire from your local Radio-shack.
Step 2: Connect one of them from the center post of your power cable input located on the back of your mixer and run it to the positive output from your wall socket.
Step 3: Take another and connect it to another post on either side of the center post on the power cable input on the back of the mixer and make sure to leave the other end bare.
Step 4: Cross the streams.

...

Waaaiiitttt that doesn't seem right. I think that was for the old Behringer amps, sorry.

First step is to determine what you are trying to use as an input to the mixer. If it is a low-impedance microphone like a Shure SM58, plug the female and of an XLR cable into the mic and the cable's male end into an input on the mixer. Configure the preamp section on the console and it should work.

If you are trying to get an RCA output from a CD player or a similar playback device to the mixer, you will need to get an adapter of some kind. I highly suggest the Whirlwind pcDI. If that is not possible, an adapter from the RCA to a pair of XLR connectors should do the job well. Just plug them in to the mixer and configure the inputs as line inputs, and if possible, put the two inputs onto a stereo pair.

From the outputs to the speakers/amps, you will most likely need an XLR cable. Plug the female end of the XLR cable to your mixer's left output, and the male end into your powered speaker's or amplifier's input for the left side of the stereo. Do the same with your right side.

Power on your system in the appropriate order. Make sure to route your inputs to the L/R main buss. If the system doesn't work, I highly suggest you stop using the mixer to avoid damaging your investment, and promptly contact a qualified professional who can come down and teach you in person about how to properly set up your system. Make sure he isn't from marketing. Get your friend's help ONLY as a last resort.

So EXACTLY what are you trying to do-Hook the mixer to a 'DJ" system (whatever that is considered to be) or hook up DJ equipment to the mixer?

These are very different things-one is inputs and the other is outputs.

Exactly what gear (model number-brand etc) are you trying to hook to the mixer?

It is confusing (at least to me) exactly what you are trying to do.

Ivan....

I had hoped by telling him to "use the proper cables" that he would come back and ask some questions which would give us a clue as to just which of the thousands of possible devices he actually possesses.

It was a loaded statement......

This is what I have. Behringer Xenyx x1204 Mixer, Pyle Pro PTA 1000 amp, and a 482i Sonic Maximizer. I would like to hookup all three in the system. I would like someone to please tell me what output wire goes to what input etc. Thank you.

well throw the sonic maximizer outside and use it what it was made for (an anchor) and take the outputs of the mixer into the inputs of the amp.

Why do you WANT to use all three? What are you trying to achieve?

There must be more to the system, where does the sound come from? Laptop? iPod? Microphone? Vinyl Decks?

It's not heavy enough for an anchor. If you bend it in half, it makes a pretty decent door stop however.

Dear Gerald McClaren,

Thanks for your question. It looks like the best signal path for connecting your mixer, sonic maximizer and amplifier will be in this series.

Playback Source ie Laptop -> Stereo Channel on Mixer ie 5/6
Main Output of x1204USB -> Input of sonic maximizer
Output of sonic maximizer -> Input of Amplifier
Amplifier -> Speakers

Please let us know if we can help you further.

Andrew, your answer is WAY to serious. LOL.

I'd strongly suggest ditching the Sonic Maximizer. It's not going to help. Then all you need to do is connect XLR cables from the Main Outputs on the mixer to the amplifier. Hook up your source and your speakers and you're done. This is on page 9 of the manual found http://www.behringer.com/assets/1204USB_X1204USB_M_EN.pdf. The outputs are the only 2 male XLRs on the board. Ignore the 4 female XLR connectors on top of the board, and instead look around the back, where you'll find the 2 male connectors. You can tell that mixers are designed by lonely single guys because they always put more female connectors than male connectors on the board. How handy that comes in for you right now.

If you have 1/4" cables, you can use those too, but then you're working with the alt 3/4 outputs of the board instead. Conveniently, those plugs are right next to the XLR output connectors. Of course, if you use 1/4" connectors, all of the jacks on the board are female, and the cables are male. This can result in awkward situations if a connector ends up in a jack where it doesn't belong. Kind of like ending up at a drag show and not realizing that you're at one until its too late. But fear not, Behringer understands. That's why they labeled the jacks ALT. They don't discriminate.
