I want to send wireless MIDI from a laptop's USB port.

I have a Behringer DEQ2496. It can be controlled by a computer via USB MIDI using this.

I have a cheap USB MIDI interface, the kind that's just a “line lump” on the cable and it works well.

This would be more useful to me if I was able to send the MIDI data wirelessly from my laptop, and preferably without chaining multiple devices together. The system I'd like would have a USB MIDI interface + transmitter in one unit and a receiver with MIDI connectors on it in another unit. Ideally the transmitter would be bus powered and the receiver would be mains powered. I'd like a range of about 20 metres.

What I want to do is generate data on the laptop and have it show up in a rack as a pair of MIDI cables.

There's an M-Audio product but it seems to be the reverse of what I'm doing in that it takes the MIDI out of a controller and sends it into the PC for VSTi's and such.

I could get it to work but I'd have to plug the line lump thing into it and it would get messy quickly.

This will do it well but it's £150,which is understandable for what it can do but unrealistically expensive for what I need.

A cheaper version of that that only does one MIDI channel would be cool.

Any thoughts?

i doubt you'd get under 300 ducks for a suitable gizmo
[quick search was +/-4...]

if you have another computer you could try a remote desktop...

I'd mainly use it when I was using the DEQ for monitor wedge EQ on an analog system with monitors from FOH and no helpers. It would let me listen to it as I EQ'd it rather than running back and forth to the console. I don't need absolute reliability as it's only sending data and a dropout for a second would be OK.

I'd thought about another computer, but that would add more complexity and setup time than this is worth.

Consumer level stuff is fine for this as it's only a convenience. If it stops working I can just do things conventionally.

CME WIDI really is quite good, I built one into my keytar and lasts ages on batteries (I have it powered by the keytar but on it's own batteries (AAx2) the receiver will last 15hrs+ easily), plus it's duplex so transmits midi in both ways. The m-audio unit was quickly discontinued and from the reviews I've seen is useless and only has a ~10M (30ft) range. The CME WIDI states 250ft and I reckon it could do it. It is 2.4Ghz but hasn't interfered or got interference for the many wifi networks around where I live.
In all fairness £150 (it's roughly £75 per transceiver on Thomann (the only place I've seen it)) it cheap for what you get.
