So, what's the story with MADI? I need to be able to pipe MADI into a computer for multitrack recording. PCI, PCI-Express, or Expresscard would be great. Anything out there that's not $3000?

I doubt they come much cheaper than SSL Madixtreme. I'm using one and it's works well.

DiGiCo's UB MADI (MADI to USB) is around $1,200.
The RME MADIFace can be found for around $1,600.

In the UK at least, the SSL cards are the cheapest followed by the UB Madi. Bear in mind though that the UB Madi only sees the first 48 available inputs and is not patch able making it not a full solution, especially with something like a venue which doesn't have fully patch able outputs...

+1 on the SSL Madiextreme. It is a stable product that has been in the market a long time (formerly under the Sydec/Soundscape name).
Remember that they are optical in/out only, so you have to factor in a SSL opti/coax converter or Directout Split.converter or EX.box (I really like DirectOut -notice the redundant PSU's on all their products8)~

~ ) if you need to use coax.I would never buy an opti-coax from ssl, very unreliable in my experience. In fact, I believe that the latest run of ssl Madi converters/routers will be manufactured by directout who make fantastic gear

Well MADI is just a framing protocol. Should be independent of the physical layer. I couldn't find any references to a differential implementation on UTP cabling though? Who manufactures the device your trying to connect?
P.S. Looks like soundcraft has a Cat5 UTP MADI interface?

Are you using a Digico SD9/11 ? Do you realise you can copy the audio from the Cat 5 input to the MADI BNC out very easily?

And if you do need to use the cat5, the digico red/blue box will convert to coax for you

Indeed the Digico UB Madi and the Red/Blue boxes can convert BNC madi to cat5
There is no cat5 madi direct to computer that I know of

Is the CAT5 MADI that Digico uses compatible with the CAT5 MADI that Soundcraft uses? Will the Digico boxes work to connect a Soundcraft Vi1 via MADI to a laptop (with a RME MADI card)
