Install a curtain to the ceiling... yea

Did one of these last year and it nearly killed me. Room was wide open. Ceiling only had a few can lights to work around too.

I started on one end of the curtain, tacked it up to the ceiling and we put wood ''tack strips'' every 4' to minimize sag in the middle.

This one we are doing now is a bit different. There are permanent tables below us and we don't quite have a 20x13 foot area to work with. Its an old building. Drywall ceiling and I HOPE I can locate solid wood behind it. Being extremely old construction it could be a guessing game. There will be 2 can lights and a HVAC vent that I need to work around this time, plus we need to fold an end back due to two ceiling fans that are in the way. So the space is no longer square. (like the last one)

I've considered building a frame on the floor, mounting the curtain to it, and then lifting it up all at once. Alas, that may take a dozen guys and I don't have that many on hand. Tops I'll have 4.

This is the curtain we are hanging on the ceiling.

Here are a few pics of the other one we installed:

Can you use an infra-red camera to locate the joists? You know....the kind they use to evaluate home energy loss??

Just a thought.....

I do have good attic access. In some spots there are subfloors in the attic and I may need to cut some access holes. In this area of town nothing was built square it seems. Area was built in the early 1718, and depending on what country owned the area at the time, additional buildings sprung up. I'm unsure of the age of this building but I don't expect anything overhead to be square or uniform. I'll use our good stud finder as well as make exploratory holes in the ceiling.

This curtain has grommets every 3' along the long sides and about every 4.5' on the ends. I'm thinking of running a series of eyebolt/screws into the joists and using bungie cords to stretch the canvas. Then for where it sags in the middle, use wide poly-headed fasteners directly thru the fabric.

I used to build decks, often by myself. You may want to look into renting a drywall lift, and you would be amazed at what you can lift into place and hold with a set of bottle jacks and 2x4's cut to length.

not knowing the weight of the curtain, just throwing ideas out there..

what about aircraft cable from wall to wall pulled really tight. attach the curtain to that, and add a few screw eyes here and there to take some of the sag out.

Why not drill a ton of little holes in the ceiling pull fiber optic lighting through them. Seal up the hole with the tip of the fibers hanging through. Paint the ceiling, and then trim back the fibers. It would be easier and look more professional. Also it would be cheaper to do, so if you charged the same amount you'd make more money.

Re: Install a curtain to the ceiling... yea

Fiber Optic would work, but was not an option. (ie. very limited above ceiling access)

No way to rip up the dual floors in the attic and the entire building's HVAC system sits directly over most of the area the client wanted covered.

Can't say how I'd do it as I don't know how you are attaching the curtain, but I'm sure these anchors would be involved:

I'd find wood to attach to in at least 90% of the places and the few that I couldn't hit, I'd use these

You can get them in different sizes and they will support more weight than about any other hollow wall anchor I can think of.

You could pull drop ceiling hanging wire through them and attach the curtain to the hanging wire. The stuff is quite rigid and works very well with the screw eyes.
