Insurance for weekend guys

I am active duty air force and now that im to the point of buying equipment again and trying not to get burned like last time when i had a trailer stollen from a village inn parking lot in phoenix and never had anything returned other than 1 sls920 and what was left of the trailer and then had to pay for the damage caused by my trailer being ripped from the light poll, i want a way to protect my equipment.

Theft only being a small part of it, the main thing i want to cover is events and installs (yes i have proper training, licenses and a degree dealing with flying loads not to mention growing up in a contractors home) and the equipment and people around my equipment.

I already have storage insurance for damage, flood and theft.

Are installs and events normally different policies? What do you have in insurance and what does it do for you? Are freelancers normally covered for using your equipment?

Im in Central Ga, anythoughts or insight would be great.

I have a 2 million dollar liability policy with Zurich written by Strawn & Co. Insurance in McDonough, GA. It cost $500 and some change for a year. What it does for me is make it possible to do many of the municipal events that require insurance and make my marketing presentation more professional for those who don't require it. Hopefully I will NEVER need it for any other reason.

$500 thats interesting. I was quoted $5151.50 for a 1 mill policy from a online source.

I shopped around and then asked all of my friends in the business for a recommendation. The prices ran all over the place but the highest I was quoted was about $1800 for what I do. 2013 will be my third year with Strawn and Zurich. Price has a lot to do with how much gross sales and how much exposure you will have for the year. Also I am stacking as opposed to flying the PA. You have to tailor the coverage for what you are actually doing otherwise it can get costly in a hurry. Be realistic rather than optimistic about your projected sales. If you run over, it is just a phone call and credit card to amend the policy.

There are a lot of small providers who tell their insurance company that they are DJs and the policies are in the $500-$800 range. If you aren't paying several thousand dollars you probably aren't covered correctly.

Where I live and work it requires a minimum of 1,000,000/2,000,000 to get work with any municipality with the exception of at least one that requires a 2,000,000/4,000,000 policy. Many also require workers comp certs too. So don't forget to make sure you have that policy in place too.

If I look at all of my insurance policies combined, it costs me close to $100 per invoice to insure my company. I prefer to keep good insurance coverage and it costs real money. Of course the guys out there that are not insured or pretend to be something that they aren't don't even consider how much it really costs to do work in this business.

Again, most of the premium is based on exposure and gross sales. This is JV and we are talking general liability insurance for weekend warriors. I am sure rates vary in different parts of the country and believe me they vary from carrier to carrier but here in Georgia, with a little shopping, good rates can be had with a premium company. I just checked my policy and "DJ" doesn't appear anywhere on my binder or on any of the certificates (even though I occasionally go out with some dubstep DJ's). I made it very clear what I do including the lighting rigs I have.
