Interesting Rider

Received a rider this morning that I'm still laughing at...

Event is some sort of back-to-school program...no other details. They need power amps, some monitors, and a CD player. No mention of mics or a mixer.

Stage plot shows the stage (with nothing on it) and a diagram of the audience area with a speaker at each corner, all four facing inward toward the center of the audience. In the center of the audience is: "Create a vortex with the sound emitting from the speakers."

Other misc stuff on this one:

"The sound needs to be equal to that of a concert"

"A good rule-of-thumb is 1 watt per audience member"

"If the program is outdoors, the wattage should be doubled"

"Plan on using more, rather than fewer speakers"

"Please be prepared with spare fuses in case we blow them during the show"

"A sound system consists of speakers, amplifier, microphones, and a CD player" (No mixer needed I guess??)

"Any brand is good"

"The speakers should be directional speakers without much bass response"

Trying to get in touch with the "performer(s)" to see what we're in for and if its worth messing with...

I could have saved a shitload of money.

Ignorance is bliss.

Re: Interesting Rider

"Vortex of sound"? Sounds like someone heard swishy comb filtering and thought it was a cool effect. The good news is that it's easy to recreate.

Edit - I'm also glad they want the sound to come out of the speakers. It's a lot harder to get sound to come out of the CD player or amplifier.

Re: Interesting Rider

Just give them exactly what they asked for......and when they want all the other necessary gear at the job site, hand them an inventory list with rate/piece on it, haul it out of the trailer and tack it onto the bill.

Re: Interesting Rider

Hello,

Yeah.....this "rider" is pretty silly, but, It's clear that it was written by someone with little experience in either Audio or writing a tech rider. This could be an opportunity to not only help this lost, rider-writer, but, make yourself the go-to guy when they need any A/V related gear and/or help producing an event they plan.

Take fifteen minutes from your schedule to write a direct comparison tech rider...as how it should have really been written (and to make yourself the "preferred" vendor for any and all future business) and you'll be helping yourself, the sender of the original rider, and some kids. (most kids need help) ;o)

Good Luck,
Hammer

Charlie,

We have already done just that. The venue is on campus at a college we do a lot of work for. We finally go to talk to the performers and they said that the "rider" was written by a friend of theirs who had "done some sound" for them in the past. We kindly explained to them that their rider was of little real help to most providers. After the conversation, we now have a pretty good idea of what they will need for this particular venue. After the gig, we plan to help them come up with something a little more informative and helpful.

Ecclesiastes 11:1

In both the christian and hebrew traditions. If you like I can share the same thought in Hindu or Buddhist tradition.

Or maybe just in sound tech speech: A case of positive addition with no negative cancellation.
