Introducing The Slate Pro Audio RAVEN MTX Multi-Touch Production System

Re: Introducing The Slate Pro Audio RAVEN MTX Multi-Touch Production System

With some refinement it could become a civilized PA mixing interface. The guys running SAC would finally have a full surface.

I read one of the comments that mentioned the price as <$25,000. Even with a really butch computer and "better than ADA8000" i/o, the total price of a 48X24 could be well under $40k.

Steve Slate is kind of eccentric, but he's not crazy. It will be interesting to see how the Raven is accepted.

I don't see the viability at that cost. Most hardware surfaces can be had near or below that cost and do the same thing. Why pay more for the same thing? In essence all they have done is take a DAW surface and put into a touch screen interface. The idea is cool, but I don't see it yet. It is a recreation of the wheel, not better, but equal at the moment.

There are 2 versions, the MTX and the MTi. The MTX is meant to compete with Avid Icon and Euphonix System 5 type products. The MTi is MUCH more affordable, with similar feature set but a smaller screen.

This is designed as a control surface for many DAW's, but it does not have I/O except for a monitoring section.

Perhaps it could be adopted for use with a live application in mind. Steven Slate has written about the research they did and why this display is much different than typical multi-touch displays such as the 3m. It is worth checking out if this interests you.

Right now I think the only way it could reliably be used live were if you had a Protools HD TDM or AAX Dsp based rig and a lot of I/O. I have seen guys do that years ago (mix a live show) with TDM rigs, but it was cumbersome if you ask me.

Certainly I think this is just the beginning, and that we will see much more of this kind of thing entering into both the recording and live sound markets. Slate's concept will certainly be copied.

Apparently the MTi is $3500, certainly interesting if it can perform tricks beyond being the equivalent of a multitouch DAW screen.

With the current SAC systems currently offered that can be run with touch screen computers, I don't see it hitting the live market either? The basic level SAC system can be built with a standard comp. for around 2-3k bucks. To add another 3.5k just to have touch screen ability is not going bring everyone in screaming hell yeah....... This is also because you can acquire a touch screen comp these days to run the SAC system for less than you can imagine. I don't see it for slate, making it in the long haul. Is it a cool piece of tech, hell yeah!!!!! But it is not at the forefront of what can currently be done at a lower price with some ingenuity. We don't need another expensive control surface, we need another cheaper stand alone, all in one surface that does the same thing.........

I feel like your arms/shoulders would get tired after a long session. Very cool Id want one but maybe not too ergonomic.
