JBL 2206H cone replacement

Hello

I have a bunch of JBL 2206 elements, that need repair.
On the other hand I do not have any use for them, so I will not put my money into fixing them with C8R2206 - only to have them collecting dust on the shelve.
But then I could use some 12-inch woofers, that go down to 30-40Hz - usable limit on 2206 is about 60Hz.

So I am looking for recone kit, that fits into 2206 frame, goes down to 30-40Hz and can handle 200+ watts - sensitivity 90+ with long excursion

I could use 8-12 kits - and it would be fine, if they were not preassembled - so they would go in smaller package.

Is there such recone kit somewhere out there ?

Thanks for looking

Re: JBL 2206H cone replacement

Hello

I add to previous post, that if there are any good ideas of how to use those JBL:s with original recone kits, they are welcome, too. I do not need any more top cabinets or monitors and these are not good in closed or ported boxes at lowest frequencies. I am not familiar with horn constructions - tapped or not - so I´ve no clue if they would be any good there.

Timo,

The 7.62 Xmax is determined by the magnet assembly, an aftermarket kit can't increase that. Going to a heavier cone could lower Fs, but you would still be stuck with Frankenstein drivers with less than half the Xmax (6 dB less output) of current drivers. In addition, from all I hear there are no aftermarket kits that come close to the quality of JBL parts, pay half the money but last half as long...

I'd suggest selling them as is, and purchasing drivers that have the specifications you desire. I don't know the availability of product in Finland, but the Alpine SWR (20mm Xmax) and SWS (15mm Xmax) series drivers are generally a very good displacement to money value, good thermal design, and are well built. Probably not quite as good as B&C, but you get what you pay for..

Hello

Thank you for rapid answers. I really like expression "Frankenstein drivers" - that´s exactly what I was looking for - suppose I just get rid of the frames I have - propably they end in metal waste bin - a pity, but space is limited.

Those frames have value to someone who wants to recone those speakers. Scrapping them should be the last option.

Does Finland have a service similar to Craigslist? If so, place an ad and see if you can find them a new home.

Re: JBL 2206H cone replacement

Hello

Surely we have all kinds internet forums and marketplaces - one particularly - www.muusikoiden.net for those of you who read finnish ;-)) has discussion forum and market place - and about everybody and their cousin in music business - wannabees to pros read that - so I can find new home for them. I do reconing so I can make them to practically anyone who has urge to have them.

Now at 169,-€ per piece http://www.thomann.de/fi/jbl_c8r_2206.htm they are not exactly cheap - and then there is the labour fee - so potential buyers are not exactly wearing my hinges out very soon - thinks me - am I right or am I right?

Is there a reliable source for original cones at better price?

THX for intrest

I don't know that answer - hopefully someone else will chime in.

I see that same vendor offers new 2206H at 429-€. If that is your local going rate, it would seem there is some room for your labor charge and still remain at 50-75% of new.

If it were me, I would offer them either as raw frames or reconed with factory kits. Let the Buyers decide.

Timo,

but you would still be stuck with Frankenstein drivers

Back when I was doing reconing, the most "Frankenstein" woofers I ever made were dubbed "JBMceaveys"

They worked very well. The 18" frames were McCauley, with Peavey black widow magnets and JBL 2440 cones.

Sometimes you get lucky-but most of the time the "swapping of kits" results is less than desirable results.

Re: JBL 2206H cone replacement

Hello

I do reconing so there is no labour fee for me - therefore wasting time in making science is not an issue

If I could find any recone kit, that would physically fit and be low cost, I would buy one and recone.
Then I would measure the result with JBL-Speakersoft or Harris BassBoxPro.
If result was what I´m looking for, then I´d get more of those recone-kits.

ART - I would not be STUCK with Frankenstein, because I would put them in small boxes and sell them to people who want to have subwoofer in their car.
CHEAP is the word here from beginning to bitter end.
But it might just as well be, that I simply bring the whole lot to junkyard and forget about it...

The odd thing with MOST JBL 2226 & 2206 was, that they all broke at the same place - a circular "cut" at the first rib.
Enclosures were both original JBL and some home-made - all used with proper low-cut filters and reasonable power.
I have more than ten units gone exactly the same way.
That is easily fixed with glue and paper.
