Calling all SRX712m users!!!

Starting to piece together amp racks to power these puppies. A few question for those of you who own/use/destroy these wedges:

1- What are you powering them with?
2- Are you bi-amping or running passive?
3- What kind of music are you dealing with?


Basically, I'm trying to figure out if there is a large enough benefit to biamp these things. I'm aiming for as much SPL as possible when needed, and something that isn't going to break my back, or the bank.

A few things:

-I DO NOT need an amp with DSP functions. I already have Lake processing available, and would prefer to use that.
-I plan on running wedges in pairs most of the time.
-I will not considering bridging amps as an option.

My goal is to have 4 mixes in 6RU of rack space(10 space rack- 2RU for DSP, 2RU for I/O, 6RU for amps).


So.... What's everyone using?

PLX3002, PLX3402, PL230, CC4000

Passive with the 3002 and CC4000, bi-amp with the others.

3- What kind of music are you dealing with?

Anything and everything from jazz to "hard rock", top 40 cover bands to nationals, SOS gigs, whatever, except for screamo turn-everything-up-louder-than-everything-else type stuff, I avoid that if at all possible.

they sound absolutely great without bi amping, and i have driven then with anything that gives them at least 1000 watts each. I have thrown itech 4ks, macrotech 5000s and a few others at them. they will take as much power as you toss at them.

Biamped off of XTi4Ks using JBL's preset files. We've never had an issue with volume and haven't blown a single component in the years that we've been running them that way, even with some touring acts that would be considered excessively loud.

We get more compliments when running them biamped than when running them passive, although they still sound pretty damn good run passive.

Try these settings (that I got somewhere a while back).

Passive PEQ:
HPF 62, BW24
81Hz, Q=5.706, G=+4.5dB (note this works in conjunction with the HPF)
225Hz, Q=4.41, G=+4dB (note some of this is boundery cancellation so flavor gently)
500Hz, Q=6.491, G=-3dB
1.68kHz, Q=2.035, G=+3dB
14.7kHz, Q=5.706, G=-5.5dB (HF response taming, they use a passive lift network that's excessive IMO)

Active:
Lows
HPF = 91.3Hz, 48dB, LR
LPF = 1.22kHz, 24dB, LR
Gain = 0dB
Polarity = +
Delay = 0.00msec
PEQ:
648Hz, Q=3.876, G=+2.5dB
1kHz, Q=1.573, G=+2.5dB
354Hz, Q=1.382, G=-2.5dB
Easyover off, threshold=+3dB

Highs
HPF = 1.21kHz, 24dB, LR
LPF = thru
Gain = -15dB
Polarity = -
Delay = 0
PEQ:
3kHz, Q=2.996, G=-1.5dB
2kHz, Q=5.706, G=-2.0dB
5.04kHz, Q=4.41, G=-1.5dB
11.6kHz, Slope=9, G=-5.5dB (hf lift)

On the JBL web site, there is a Lake preset for Bi-Amping the wedges.


With your current racks being QSC, I would think that a PL236 would be enough.

Curious about the change of heart from "-I DO NOT need an amp with DSP functions. I already have Lake processing available, and would prefer to use that" to IT4ks? Gotta be "legit"?

I'm really bouncing back and forth on this. 4 IT4000's seems like the most "legit" way to power them & save rack space. 4 IT4000's will cost me roughly $4,800. That's plenty of power, and DSP built in. Cool.

Going the other route, I need 2 2 channel amps for the lows, and 1 4 channel amp for the highs. I want matching amp series at least, and I'm really striking out on finding a solid 4 channel amp that I like. Lab Gruppen comes to mind, but the fp6400 is double the price of a used IT4000. QSC PL3 series are eh in my book, still more expensive than a used IT4000. Crown MA series can be had for pretty cheap, but the weight is killer. So, I'm starting to run out of ideas to make it happen... I do want to bi-amp them, whether or not it makes a huge difference, it will make riders happier.

And lest you forget, beyond amps, all those channels of Lake processing aren't cheap either, even if you already own it.

Yep, got it. One setup I use has QSC CX404s on the horns, but those are stoopid $$ for what they are, whole CX series is if you ask me. Not a lot of nice four channel packages out there. Under $5k for the IT4k rack makes sense. I put my IO on the back of the rack so I can fit in 10 spaces.

In my experience with 712s on XTi4Ks, you couldn't go wrong with the IT4K. Considering 4 new XTis would cost you close to 4 used iTechs that makes it a no brainer imo.
