I going to assume that this is a no brainer, but which would you choose and why? I've used both subs and they both sound good, but the EAW's just seem to mop the floor with the 728's. Music styles from all genres including EDM. Live and playback.

What's the rest of your rig?

I have no useful experience with the SRX728, but it's not in the VerTec lineup for a reason.

Many choose to denigrate the SB1000, but I have a lot of hours on that subwoofer and I just don't hear it. It's a fine box that gets loud in a small footprint and gets reasonably low. It also takes a lot of abuse. I'd rather have it over many boxes, it's a known quantity and I can easily get it to do what I want. Perhaps the people who don't like it haven't processed it correctly, I have no idea.

Re: JBL SRX728 VS. EAW SB1000z

My apologies to the OP for a slight thread swirve. I have 8 SB1000z, but I don't have enough to cover a B national, so I have 4 x yorkville tx-9S cabinets, that I have put in the middle, and put them on aux. Can anyone give me a ball park eaw cabinet, that I can use in my UX , that would bring me close to what a tx-9 is... I am not familiar enough to do any usable measurements with smaart, so use small words, in your explainations.. lol

Shane,

You're in a catch 22. The people that want to do this don't know how, and the people that do know how don't want to do it ;) The best case would be knowing the correct processing for the subwoofer, then you will likely only have to deal with a phase issue. Since I assume you don't have the proper processor with the correct settings, you are going to have to measure the thing if you want to line it up with your SB1000s.

P.S. 8 SB1000s is a lot of juice! Does another 4x double 18 cabs really make the difference? That's, like, 3dB more output at best.

Shane,
How about you and I get together sometime and I'll bring my measurement rig, we'll put together some "starting point" settings.
Since I'll need to crossrent from you a few times this season, we can consider a barter or something similar.

Re: JBL SRX728 VS. EAW SB1000z

Considering that you already have a preference for the SBs, I suggest that you keep your rig all-EAW. As Bennett points out, the SB1000 is a know quantity and that works in your favor with visiting engineers. Brand consistency is good marketing, too.

How are you currently processing and powering your 650s? If you're using conventional amps, remember that the I-Tech introduces latency even if you don't use any internal processing. Crown has a chart in the owner's manual.

I've not been over-impressed by the SB1000 in this century; better subs have come along.... but that's not the point. It's about you having a capable rig that makes you money, that is easy to book over the phone or even over the intertubes/sociopath networking things.

The point of my original reply was "if you've made up your mind, why ask?" It wasn't a swipe at EAW or a promotion of the 728.

Have fun, good luck.

How many to have roughly the same amount of headroom while maintaining the +10dB "haystack" for live music, and how many to have sufficient thermal headroom to survive a long EDM party? Hehehehe... what's your budget?

I'd start with a pair and consider adding another pair for the EDM-type gigs.

Re: JBL SRX728 VS. EAW SB1000z

The SB1000 are in a different league to the SRX728s. I own 6 SRX718s... I think that 3 SRX 18's would keep up with 1 SB1000. But the other weekend I had a GoGo band and 'Club DJ' in a 400 person warehouse, the SRX718s had enough, but when the Low long bass note came, the IT8000 would trip the 20amp breaker.

I just mixed at a festival with 6 SB1000 perside with LabGruppen PLM10000Q for power and 75-100' back the bass was still rumbling.

Re: JBL SRX728 VS. EAW SB1000z

Tim, What is your answer to these questions?

I don't know. I don't use either box. I practice system engineering the old-fashioned way... I take a Scientific Wild_Ass Guess (SWAG) and run until something breaks. If nothing breaks under the anticipated use, I increase the stress until I hear a problem. And then we see if I'm re-coning.... We don't have deep pockets, but a *little* destructive testing can be very informative.

The greatest thermal stress *you* are likely to present to your subs will be from EDM; possibly mechanical stress, too, from the ELF content that extends below the cut-off freq of the sub. In more conventional, "peak-oriented" program like rock or pop or county, you will probably be more likely to have mechanical stress from over-excursion than thermal problems. Having not done an EDM gig in over a decade, I don't have any experience that would be relevant to your questions, other than to say your tops and subs have roughly the same long term output (within 3 dB). A second pair of SB1000 and an amp will give you a 6dB increase in output.

You're going to buy a pair of SB1000; get them. do a couple of shows and decide if you need another pair and amp.

Have fun, etc.

Re: JBL SRX728 VS. EAW SB1000z

We have 8 SRX 278 powered with Crown iTech 9000HD. We use the Vertec 4880 preset and the subs sound amazing. I have owned d&b B2's and EAW Sb1000. For the money and the type of work we do…This is a hard to beat combo.

I would argue that for many "dance-EDM-hiphop etc) type shows you need typically a 20-25dB haystack.

That starts to get expensive but is what it takes to "make it right".

At least in the experience i have had.
