Hey all! I posted this on that other forum too - hope that isnt bad form?
Anyway, I had an interesting thing happen at an event this past weekend. Small outdoor backyard fraternity / sorority thing with a 4 piece band and maybe 200 in attendance. I have 6 of each of these cabinets but was running just 1 stack per side - JBL STX835 over JBL STX828S. I run each cabinet off 1 channel of a Crown iTech 6000 and the 835s are passive.
I have had this system for almost 2 years with no issues and I really like the sound of this rig.
At the 1st break FOH was swarmed with girls wanting to DJ from their iPhones which is fine with me so I let them have at it. One of the band guys comes up to me and says "your speaker is on fire". Sure enough, white smoke billowing out of the top of 1 of the 835s. The cabinet was still working - at least the 15" in the bottom and the mid/hi drivers and it didnt sound distorted or otherwise odd. I shut the amp off and pulled the speaker down. Lots of white smoke, I could touch it but the grill at the top was very hot and the moisture barrier inside the grill was melted... The rest of the grill was cool so it appears that it is just the 15" in the top of the cabinet that went poof.
Since I wasnt running the system hard at all and there were no other obvious issues I decided that it was just that 1 driver - not an amplifier issue, not a crossover issue, etc - so we pulled another 835 off the truck, stacked it and went on with the show. I did switch to a different iTech6000 just in case but I do think the issue is with that 1 driver. We did 2 more sets with canned music in between and no problems
Maybe a manufacturing defect? As I said I have had the rig for a while but I have never run all 6 top cabinets at the same time and I do not have them marked so it is possible that I have never used that cabinet or maybe only a time or 2. Unfortunately I really dont know.
Has anyone seen this before?
I havent torn the box down yet but intend to this weekend - they are out of warranty. I have been looking at the exploded view of these cabinets and am hoping that it wont be too difficult although it looks like I may have to remove the entire mid/hi wave guide and drivers to get to the 15s. Has anyone torn 1 of these guys apart? Anything to look out for?
Thanks!
