...on both of the stages with live presentations the speaker system consisted of a pair of TWO EV sx250s on tripod stands right next to each other with the speaker grilles lined up flush in a pretty much straight line.

With the main source material being talking heads on one stage and some guy playing back loops and samples on a vibraphone sized thing covered with drum pads on the other I guess the comb filtering didn't make THAT much difference but Grampa makes the following observations and guesses.

In both rooms they might have needed wider coverage on the first two days of the show and those speaker actually WERE splayed to cover that angle.

On the third and final day (when I was there the strike of the "main stage" in room 2005 was already well underway) the smaller crowds needed less horizontal coverage but since four speakers were ordered and paid for then four speakers had to remain visible in case the organizers were paying attention and counting.

Me, I would have discreetly turned off the outside two boxes ;-).

PS: the best part of the guy playing the pads was when the cameraman who was shooting RIGHT IN HIS FACE stepped on and disconnected the power to the pad thingie, making things real quiet for a few minutes.

The big misunderstanding about combfiltering is that most people think that it is real obvious and real nasty sounding.

It is not-and can EASILY fool experienced sound guys. I once spent quite awhile chasing down the combfiltering inside a digital console-but I did not realize it as such-until I measured the impulse response-THEN it was very obvious.

It is just that WITHOUT the combfiltering it sounds better-clearer etc. So most people don't even know they are experiencing it-so they say it doesn't exist or is a problem. But it could be better.

Getting the job done-and getting it done correctly are often different things.

Agreed I would have turned off one speaker on each side-or at least turn the level down quite a bit-so that it was still making noise-but not enough to cause interference.

Or maybe on the third day an event planner said "that looks stupid, straighten those boxes".

Because everybody knows that event planners know more about audio than those "audio guys".

They know what size speakers to use-where to put them-how loud to run them and so forth.

Mac World? Planned by Apple, the people who know what you want before you do!
You wanted comb filtering, you're just afraid to embrace it!
