LCR speaker placement and comb filtering

I am designing the Lion King (JR) in about two months and would like to explore the idea of using a LCR system. Currently, we are only setup for a center line-array with 3 speakers and a sub. I have access to two KW122 speakers that I could mount from a balcony almost in line with the center (horizontally and almost vertically (5 feet below) and about 20-25 feet off from center. I am hoping that by having a full LCR system, it would allow me to create some more dynamic reverbs (have slightly different reverb in the L and R channel), separate the soloist from the mix, and really fill up the room and add some depth to the choruses along with some general stereo imaging when needed. So my question is if this would be an appropriate use for a LCR system and what should I do to minimize the "power spots" and "dull spots" partly caused by comb filtering?

Thanks for your help!

Re: LCR speaker placement and comb filtering

The FIRST thing you need to think about in a LCR system is to treat system AS IF IT IS the only system in the room.

Does each of the 3 systems cover the entire room BY ITSELF? If not-then you are starting to have compromises and not everybody will be getting "all the information".

You said said a center line array and you want to mount the "stereo" speakers from the balcony.

How are the people on the main floor going to hear these speakers?

You need to remember that YOU are there for the people attending-NOT to have a great sound for the operator.

COmbfiltering happens when you have 2 identical signals arriving at different times (due to different physical locations).

When you have different signals, the combfiltering is lower or non existent-depending on the signal.

It's a little odd... we have a balcony over the orchestra pit which will be used as part of the stage for this production. The main linearray fills the front section and the balcony behind the mixing desk has a delayed stereo pair. We also have two speakers that were taken out of the main line array in the past that could be used as a fill for the front few rows if needed.

Then maybe it would help if you would provide a drawing of what is existing and what you are proposing.

Without that-people (just like myself) will make all kinds of "assumptions" that may or may not be valid.

It is very hard to give answers to questions that are not complete.

Re: LCR speaker placement and comb filtering

It would be too hard to get a somewhat accurate drawing right now, but your answer has already supplied me with some help. I will do some research and work with our facilities manager (who obtained a degree in technical theater with a focus in sound design) and figure this out.
Thanks again for your help!
