Hi Y'all,

I'm looking at compact, lightweight, self-powered boxes under 13 kilos(29#) that sound good and get modestly loud.

Two boxes in consideration:
RCF 710-A, not Mk II version 11.2kg
dbTechnologies Flexys F10 12kg
Anybody familiar with both of these boxes?

Any other boxes you would add to the list?

Thanks and good health, Weogo

Add L-acoustic 108p to the list, although it is rather more expensive.

Re: Lightweight, self-powered boxes

My RCF 310a's get stoopid loud and sound good doing it - I suspect the 710's would be mind blowing :) .

If you are an RCF fan, the RCF NX-10SMA comes in at 32 lbs, 127dB. TT08s are 25 lbs and 125dB. Both should sound considerably better than the ART series, and cost about 2x. Both needs subs for FOH use. I use NX10's and NX12's for monitors. They sound quite good. I'm still toying with picking up some TT08s for FOH use in smaller rooms.

Re: Lightweight, self-powered boxes

Maybe the new JBL PRX 710 might be worth a look? Haven't heard them and they probably have that prx-nastiness that doesn't seem to get evolved away with each new generation, but they should fit the weight and get more than moderately loud.

Re: Lightweight, self-powered boxes

Thanks All for the replies.

Ron, I had a PM saying the 410A sounds about as good as the 710A.
And have seen several posts praising the 310A.

Rob, the 108P would indeed be a nice box, and as you say,"Rather more expensive."

Mark the NX-10SMA is a little over my (artificial)29# limit, but being coax, sure wins for compact. Do you know the latency through the box?
Have you ever used it as a main box for small gigs? That is a pretty small HF horn in there...
I have worked with the TT08A and it is indeed a surprisingly good sounding box.

Per, the PRX-710 looks like a nice box, though getting bigger and heavier than I want for this application.

Thanks and good health, Weogo

I haven't attempted to measure DSP-induced latency, but I suspect it would be similarly small to any other DSP speaker or amp. Haven't tried them as mains. Raw (w/o Eq), I like the NX12-SMA just a little better but they are both very flat. You can see my measurements of the 10 and 12 in the measurement forum of PSW. Multiple Monitor measurement - EQ suggestions ?

The downside for both these speakers as mains is the power and XLR come out the side. If you pole mount them, that means the cables are sticking out the top of the box. Not a big deal, but not clean for a wedding type gig. I haven't seen right angle Powercons, but that would solve the problem.

Re: Lightweight, self-powered boxes

There is also a RCF NX m10a speaker though it is about 3-4 pounds over your limit. Nice sounding little speaker.

Re: Lightweight, self-powered boxes

Hi Y'all,

I ended up getting a couple RCF ART 410A boxes. A little more output than the 310A, and lighter.
They sound pretty good. They do have a good bit more low-mid spill off the back and sides than my Birch boxes, and are also half the weight.

Robert, the NX M10A looks like a nice box, probably less spill, but about 10# more than the 410A.

Thanks again for all the replies, and PMs.
