Looking to Relocate on the East coast

Re: Looking to Relocate on the East coast

Personally, if I could afford it I would be heading for Eastern Idaho, or Montana.

I have no idea what the market for sound companies is like, but I have a lot of friends in the music business now around Asheville NC.

This is a no brainer.... South my man, South. Less winter weather, less heating costs, cheaper transportation cost, no rotting road salt, cheaper housing, more outside gigs... Raleigh, Atlanta, Jacksonville, etc etc etc... (posting vicariously)

Hi Matt-

First, best wishes where ever you go! There is more work where the weather is nicer but there is also more competition. The easy and/or obvious work is taken and you'll likely have to underbid to get those gigs. Find out what the hard work is, figure out other uses for portable audio systems that aren't live music-oriented.

Consider working in the AV & presentation biz as an employee of an established firm. Also consider getting on the 'casual' or 'over-hire' list with the IATSE Local in your new city. It's slow at first, but eventually you'll move up.

Have fun, good luck..

New England is tight on the wallet. Step outside NYC or Boston for that matter and people are pinching pennies. Quality of life is high though. Down to earth people. As Tim mentioned the weather is a bit of a downer.
8-14 inches of snow tonight.

We here is another problem.. I want to be close to an ice rink. So going north to play hockey is awesome too. I won't be trying to go pro or anything like that, but good level competition is fine. (I play ACHA D2 for WVU and often skated with the Caps in the off season when I was home and Wheeling Nailers when I was at school).

As a lifelong Connecticut Yankee, I would recommend Texas. (Yes I know that's not East Coast, but it does have a Gulf coast.) I am soooooo bloody sick of the taxes and cost of living and deathly economy of the Northeast, the only thing keeping me here is waiting for wife to go on pension. That, plus trying to give away the house in this market could be the real ball and chain. Which brings up an important suggestion: wherever you go, RENT, don't buy until you are absolutely sure that's where you want to be in the long run.

+1 to stay away from Connecticut!

Competitive Hockey? South of MD may not be the best option.

How about Philly/South Jersey. It's sandwiched between NY and DC with only a 1.5hr commute to each and with lower cost of living than both (but maybe not as low as Baltimore). Plenty of SR opportunities and plenty of decent hockey presence/competition. Philly seems to get a bad wrap in the press mostly due to the passionate sports fans...don't believe the hype.

I would actually like to move to Baltimore/DC area, but wifey is fixated on the Philly area. Just this past weekend we were filling out a questionaire to remodel our kitchen and one of the first questions was "how long do you plan to stay in your home"....I said under 5yrs....wifey said 20+. D'oh!
