M32 in sunlight.

I asked a question about seeing the screen and LEDs on the X32 and the M32 in sunlight a little while ago. Well I had a chance to test this myself this past week with an M32.

First we set it up about midday without a tent. The LEDs were the hardest (if not impossible) to read and the screen wasn’t easy to see clearly.

Then we put it under a 10’x10’ popup tent with a white roof. The white roof acts as a light diffuser. But it helps to keep me from getting sunburned. It was better then outside the tent, but not great.

Then we took a 9.5’ x 7.5’ (cheap) blue tarp and put tie line thru the grommets tied it to the frame and used it as an inner ceiling. Using the 9.5’ front to back. When tied up tightly it didn’t even droop in the middle. This method worked great, I could see all of the LEDs and could read the screen without any problems at all.

I then used it outside for a midday show like that and it worked out great. The next issue I am likely to encounter is at the series of outdoor shows we do in the summer where the sun is setting to my left and the sun shines into the tent rather intensely. We usually use a half sidewall that is white and I plan on using a short blue tarp to the inside of that. A darker roof surface should work well but the white roof seems to be the coolest. We have a few of these tents and the price for a replacement roof is over twice what we paid for each tent. I think the perfect roof would be one that is white on the outside and matte black on the inside. But for now this is a cheap and effective solution.

Kevin, thanks so much for taking the time to post this info! I didn't realize what a difference a white vs darker color tent could make in the readability of LED's and screens. I am considering an M32 purchase, so it is good to know about things one can do to improve the readability.

Whatever you get, you want a top with "UV coating." The plain white covers let in all the UV and you'll sunburn without chemical protection.

My understanding is that the various materials used for tent tops have roughly the same transmission (and reflection) in the UV range as the visible range, and the "UV coating" is for the longevity of the material. This of course doesn't mean that any EZ-Up (white or othersise) will prevent you from getting a sunburn, so take whatever sun precaustions you deem prudent in addition to the EZ-Up.

I don't understand why indoor/outdoor visible LCD display & scribblestrips are not available on X32s & M32s. This is a feature people would happily pay for to avoid looking like an 1800s photographer. The technology already exists (my wife has an electric book, Sony I think, readable in all situations). This is easily the most annoying characteristic of these mixers.

I am not sure that there are any (I was going to say digital) mixers that you can easily read all of the lit indicators in bright sunlight, even analog. I wonder why they don’t make them with the ability to read things in sunlight. Maybe the capabilities aren’t there at the right price point yet. You would probably need 2 different settings, inside mode and outside mode. And if you left it in outside mode when you are inside it should be blinding.

I would love to be able to go regularly to InfoComm but it is always a busy time of year for me. I went once many years ago for one day when I was working a show in Orlando and another fellow and I stayed an extra day just so we could go to InfoComm. The client even keep us on the tab for the room so we didn’t have to pay any extra. I am sure that the room didn’t cost them anything, I don’t think they usually did. But the point I wanted to make is they had large screen outdoor displays set up indoors. You could see the whole area glowing and they were really blinding indoors.

My phone has a really nice display but it can be hard to see in sunlight. I have a little hood that I made for my computer so I can see it outdoors. And even then I usually have to change SMAART to a different color scheme to be able to see it clearly.

Can anyone name a console that is real easy to see all lit indicators and the screen in the sunlight? I also think that the bigger rental tents don’t let as much sunlight in as the EZ-Up tents that we use even though they both have white roofs, the bigger tents have a much thicker top. So it is easier to see the indicators and the displays in those situations.

Interestingly the Midas PRO2/2C/1 screens can be seen perfectly in sunshine.

However the buttons (channel mute etc) can not. I usually look at the screen for mute confirmation.

I am sure it is a function of budget.
