I have a Late '07 MacBook Pro and the screen died soon after the 3 year warranty mark and my MBP is limited to desktop work because I'm using an external monitor. Prior to buying the LS9, the MBP very rarely came out to shows as I have a Lenovo ThinkPad for Lights & Playback.

The primary goal is to control the LS9. The last few shows, I've been placing the LS9 next to the stage and mixing WiFi with my ThinkPad and I'll sit at the little 4' table.

So what would you do? Buy a new iPad2 or replace the MBP screen.

The iPad2 I am looking at is the Basic WiFI one with 16 or 32 gigs.

I was trying to justify an iPad too, but then I discovered that there's a Thinkpad netbook for the same price - but with a 320GB hard drive, 4 gigs of ram, and a dual core 1.6 GHz processor. Since I have to do some typing work with whatever I get, I'm getting the Thinkpad.

Let us know how StageMix runs on it.

Do the sensible thing. Get a broken Mac on ebay with working screen and fix it yourself, and also buy the ipad! you wont regret it. Mine comes everywhere with me and the only thing I tend to do on the Mac itself is the processor intensive stuff.... photo / vid editing, web design and accounts. For all other stuff and general surfing the Ipad wins hands down purely for its 10 hour battery. It sits quite happy all day on the table and gets picked up clicked a few times then put down every couple of hours to check mail, messenger or whatever.

As for the LS9 Software..... its epicly awesome. makes the LS9 Such an easy to use board. Just do it. you wont regret it.

Also Look at Zagg mate. they make a aluminium front to protect the screen that also has a built in bluetooth keyboard. if your that way inclined. makes life on the road a little easier with one device.

I have an X61, it fine but the Mouse button is tricky for fine tuning. When running Studio Manager, myDMX & iTune; there is lag in the machine.

Re: MAC question: Screen replacement or iPad2?

I should change it to do... which should come first? I have $600 to spend on one or the other.

iPad is $500 (plus case)
Screen is $200-400

Just order yourself an iPad... You already have the think pad for other show duties, and said that the MBP rarely came out to shows anyway. Pull the trigger already, you won't regret it. The otter box case, although bulky, is what you want for taking it out to shows... Seriously.

I'd get an iPad 2. I'm really impressed with mine, just got the wifi version that I can tether to my iPhone. AudioTools and SmaartTools runs fantastic on an iPad2! Then get Splashtop remote ($10) for both your iPad and your MacBook Pro, and now you can see your MacBook Pro's screen in real time--I'm really blown away with the speed of this screen sharing/remote desktop utility! Then when you have the money saved up, replace the screen on your MBP. iFixit has some wonderful documentation to do this kind of surgery, and I get good prices on Mac parts and tools from http://www.pbparts.com Already replaced the display on my wife's MacBook, took about 2 hours. Get yourself a spudger tool from them, it will make dis assembly much easier! A micro screwdriver set and a set of jeweller's cases to keep track of all the screws are helpful as well!

Edit: Oh, and I just got a new Targus 360 degree rotating stand/leather case, protects my iPad2 really well, and is a perfect stand to prop up my iPad on a mixing console. Make sure you get a case for the iPad2, and not for the original iPad, different thicknesses!

Get the screen replaced because the cost and setup will be much cheaper. You won't have to setup anything and you won't have to move anything around. It will be all set up already.
