Macy's Day Parade… Sound Tech?

My mom has the Macy's Day Parade on and I wondering how are they sending the band sound on to the TV broadcast? The float only stays there for 3 minutes of the performance and then moves on. Everything looks self contained.

I'm pretty sure they are just lip syncing, and listen to fills once they roll into the area. Simple and works every time, except the fact that everybody is faking it.

Just saw the Goo Goo Dolls, and noticed their mic cables were cut. They had a cable plugged into the mic, but the cord was cut about 2in below the connector. So yeah lip sync. Marching bands are live though.

Re: Macy's Day Parade… Sound Tech?

I have worked a number of major parades (not Macy's). Typically we supply a float system which allows for either live vocals or lip syncing. As a float approaches the reviewing stand(s), the float system goes black and playback is shifts to the main system. Again this can be either live vocals or lip syncing as called by the parade producer. Live vocals are usually through wireless mics handed off to the talent as the float approaches. A handful of times we have supplied a system for a full band but, they were never actually used.
