found two reels of Ampex tape, I believe to be older 16 track recordings I made. Stored tails out (yessssss)

hopefully no print through

anyone own a Tascam MSR16 with Dolby type II ?

would like to review these . .

The oxide binder issue was limited (IIRC) to Ampex 456 Grand Master coated between certain dates in the 1980s. My understanding is that Ampex 406 didn't have this problem, but I could have fuzzy memory or bad info.

twenty years ago, I was probably baked when I made the recordings

I'll bet some people today still get baked while they're baking

stop me while I'm ahead..

Even after baking, I highly recommend setting up your transfer system of choice and making an archive. You may only get one pass...

Yeah. Redundancy is a good thing here, when it comes to recording and archiving the source tape.

I once copied a track from an Ampex 456 2 inch, 24-track, 15 years old. It was sticky, the playback heads lasted 30 seconds each run, before getting really dirty. The guitar solo (the very thing to be archived) was worth the effort, though,
