Maximum length of cat6 for Midas Pro Series

Re: Maximum length of cat6 for Midas Pro Series

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has tried running aes50 further than the recommended 100m over cat6 with any success?

I know people who have tried this and had success and other have had major failure. The surface can loose sync with the stage box. This was with a 150m snake. To error on the side of caution I would stay within specs.

Dear Nick,

We will only endorse distances of up to 100m with AES50 over CAT6. Generally longer distances, and the results you will get, rely up on the quality of cable, connectors and primarily the quality of the termination. External interference also has an effect. But as Daniel and Adam have already shown results can be very hit and miss. Hence why we keep to the 100m limit.

We do have some AES50 extension solutions on the way, they will be announced very soon.

Hope this helps,

Jason

Re: Maximum length of cat6 for Midas Pro Series

If AES50 is anything like ethernet, the issue is not the quality of the cable, or the connections, more it is an issue of timing of the network signal. The wait time to listen for packets is roughly equal to the time it takes the electron to travel 100M on the cable. If the cable is longer than that, the receiver will listen for a packet, and if it doesn't hear anything, go ahead and send one down the line. The result is packet collision, meaning both sides have to wait and resend. The result is that they both wait, hear nothing for the prescribed time, then resend, resulting in another collision. When this happens in an ethernet network, traffic slows WAY down. You can imagine how that would be a problem when trying to pass audio, which is pretty time sensitive.
