Mic Splitters and digital desks

Ok so I've been bit by the sharing inputs problem on a pair of M32s using a shared stage box between the two. I know that since I have switched over to digital my noise (60hz buzz) problems have pretty much gone away regardless of whether I am using a single desk or a pair (FOH&MON). I am thinking about getting a split so that I can not have to deal with the sharing inputs problem again. Anyone have experience using a non transformer split as opposed to a transformer split on digitals?

Hey Chris,

The majority of the time I'm doing an analog split (non-xfmr) between FOH & MON. I do own a nice Ramtech 3-way ISO, but sadly it rarely sees the light of day anymore. Assuming normal power distribution and proper grounding schemes between FOH & MON, a non-xfmr split should be fine 99% of the time.

I use a Seismic rackmount passive splitter with my X32's. It works great, and this particular product seems to be a nice step up from typical Seismic "quality." Catch them when they're on sale and it'll be a pretty good deal.

There are 2 versions of their 32 channel split, but this is the one I have:

I rarely see a transformer split these days, even on the largest systems I work with. I think you'll be fine with a passive split.

Re: Mic Splitters and digital desks

I've had a couple people carrying their own Seismic split with their in ear system, both had dead channels, the connectors would hardly mate with the real Neutrik's in my snake box ( I think the Seismic XLR shells are too thick) and the wire gauge looked to be less than 24.

For a two way split hardwire passive is fine with proper power distribution in play. Doing a split to a remote video or recording truck, or even to remote location in the same building that could be a different story.

We work on some fairly big stages with names you have heard, and passive splits are the only thing we own or see. I have never run into a problem caused by the split being passive vs transformer isolated. The isolation is for sending the signal to a place where the power is supplied from a different source, otherwise it's unnecessary.
Last weekend we had an act come through with their own split and mixer for their IEMs. It was a Seismic splitter, brand new. The xlrs were 'very' tight fitting into our Ramlatch splitter. The Seismics are slightly off standard size.

Cheap knock off connectors are one of my big pet peeves, had those connectors gotten stuck in my snake I would have been really pissed!
