name this mic?????

A friend of mine called me asking how to wire the XLR connector for the mic in the photo. It uses a 5 pin XLR, I told him that could lend itself to many possibilities! He could not find any name or model number on the mic. It looks one of many measurement mics I have seen with the exception of the chrome end and the side ports that make me think cardioid pattern. Sorry for the not so great picture that's what he sent me from the phone.

Let me know.

Hello,

It's impossible to tell what make/model of Mic it is. It could be a B&K, a Larson/Davis, Sencore, ????

The five pin xlr seems to point to a measurement microphone that uses a "signal conditioning" box .... (a preamp and filter set)

It may be worth some $$. I don't think you can easily convert it to a standard Mic without the schematics.

ps.I'll give ten dollars for it.... ;o)

Re: name this mic?????

I also thought that it might be a B&K but just can't tell for sure. It looks exactly like a dbx RTA-M measurement mic but that one has 3-pin.

Re: name this mic?????

I think I will name it Fred.

Someone had to be the first smartass. And I really have no idea about the mic.

If I had to guess and add some useful content I would guess Pin 1 ground Pin 2 L+ Pin 3 L- Pin 4 R+ Pin 5 R-

Re: name this mic?????

I know some BK mic use external high voltage power supplies but none of their mics have the same looking capsule end on ports on the side. Some Earthworks mics look sort of similar but their porting is different all together. The garden variety measurement mic are similar but they don't have any porting.
I almost want to say it's some cheap knock off but the five pin XLR sorta rules that out.

In the next couple of days I'll pick "Fred" up and look at him for myself.

Re: name this mic?????

Is it a stereo mic by any chance?
I know that the few that i have encountered like the shure VP88 use a 5 pin connector that pigtails out to a left and right.
just a thought

Re: name this mic?????

Hello,

After thinking about this Mic, I believe that the Mic is probably a low-end Mic that came with an equalizer/RTA. If it was a quality Mic, it would definitely have a serial number and model number stamped on it's outer case.

Do a little test.... if you can unscrew the Mic capsule from the Mic body, and if it's not wired (soldered) to the body, then, it may be of good quality. If, it is soldered, then it's crapola.

Sorry. I was too late to be the first. A water main broke and I've been dealing with trying to get the house back running........

And I'd go with the traditional "Mike" or perhaps "Mick".

I can't get to it now, but I know where a HeathKit RTA with mic is. I remember it having a non-standard connector on the mic. I'll be able to look at it Tuesday, but hopefully the mystery will be solved by then. 8-)

Re: name this mic?????

Hello,

I was to trying to recall where I've seen that Mic before...but? It's been driving me buggy. It's a Mic that was sold under a brand that was not known for Mics. For some reason, Tascam or Teac comes to mind...but?
