Does anyone here have any clue how the pully system for the NFL Skycam works?

We got into a big debate at the game tonight trying to figure out just how the system works and the camera moves around the field. The Internet isn't providing any solid answers, so I was hoping one of you guys could shed some light on the situation.

Thanks!
Evan

I think this is the system that most people are using at the moment. http://spidercam.org/2-0-the-better-cable-camera.html The site is a bit brief but at least you can search the brand name.

It was in my neck of the woods for the rugby world cup recently, and it was all rigged off of 4 truss uprights. It must be some insanely fast winches and some clever controlling as it gets around the field quickly.

I figure there is a lot of cable involved too as it could get down to the sideline at ground level for battery changes, etc.

Cheers

Considering its weight (the winches), the speeds involved, the capability to drop to ground level etc, I would say that looks dangerous.

They way I understand it the operator basically assigns a coordinate and some clever computing decides what lenght each wire needs to have to take the camera there - after that it's just a matter of motor control.

PS: The Broadway Spiderman show has people attached to the same system!8O~8-O~ Haven't seen it other than on TV, but apparantly they can do three dimentional archs and sweeps over the audience!

If I'm not mistaken, the Shanghai olympics opening ceremony also featured some aerial dancing.
